Although his songs celebrate the people of Bahia and he himself is enshrined in the popular Brazilian imagination as the archetypal Bahian, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to find fame in the 1930's and never moved back to Bahia.
He became a contemporary and sometimes rival of composer Ary Barroso and enjoyed a lifelong friendship with Bahian author Jorge Amado. Dorival Caymmi first achieved success in the late 1930s with Carmen Miranda, for whom he composed 'O Que é Que a Baiana Tem?'. He recorded for five decades, both singing solo with his own guitar accompaniment, and backed by bands and orchestras. In the 1960s many of his songs were covered by bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto, and he collaborated with Antonio Carlos Jobim. Among the many musicians heavily influenced by Dorival Caymmi are Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
Dorival Caymmi passed away at age 94 on August 16, 2008 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, of multiple organ failure. He is survived by three children, all of whom are in the prominent musicians: Nana, Danilo and Dori Caymmi.

Ô morena do mar, sou eu que acabei de chegar
Ô morena do mar
Eu disse que ia voltar
Ai, eu disse que ia chegar
Cheguei
Ô morena do mar, sou eu que acabei de chegar
Ô morena do mar
Eu disse que ia voltar
Ai,eu disse que ia chegar
Cheguei
Para te agradar
Ai,eu trouxe os peixinhos do mar
Morena
Para te enfeitar
Eu trouxe as conchinhas do mar
As estrelas do céu
Morena
E as estrelas do mar
Ai,as pratas e os ouros de Iemanjá
Ai,as pratas e os ouros de Iemanjá
The lyrics of Dorival Caymmi's song "Morena do Mar" express the return of the singer to the beloved morena, meaning brown-skinned woman, of the sea. The repeated line "Ô morena do mar" emphasizes the singer's happiness and excitement in reuniting with her. The simple yet powerful lyrics convey the singer's promise to return and his commitment to pleasing his love.
The second stanza repeats the initial promise, "Eu disse que ia voltar" or "I said I would return," followed by the exclamation "Cheguei" or "I arrived." The singer goes on to express his efforts to please his love, bringing gifts of fish, shells, stars, and even the treasures of the sea goddess Iemanjá.
The song's lyrics can be interpreted as a declaration of love and devotion to a person, place, or even the sea itself. The repeated chorus shows the singer's dedication and admiration for the "morena do mar," who represents a source of joy and inspiration.
