Moore began singing with her church choir at the age of five, and eventually became a soloist. She formed a vocal group The Poppies who had hits in 1966 with the songs "Lullaby of Love" and "He's Ready".
By the mid-1970s Moore had begun a career as a solo vocalist, and released a series of best-selling singles and albums. Among her hits of this period was "Misty Blue" (featuring backing vocals by her "Poppies" bandmate Fern Kinney). The song reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 3 on the pop chart, saving her record label, Malaco, from bankruptcy. Her next two singles were "I Believe You" (later covered by The Carpenters) and a cover version of the Willie Nelson song "Funny How Time Slips Away". Both songs reached the R&B Top 10.
Moore stopped performing for several years, returning in 1986 with a gospel album Giving It Straight To You. She went back to her original label Malaco in the 1990s, where her albums included More Moore (1997). As of 2002 she continues to perform, and has released albums on Farish Street Records of Mississippi.
Lie to Me

And you're always thinking of me
But are you thinking of me
When you're lying there with her?
Yeah I know what you're doing
But I'll let you think you're fooling me
Cause it's better for me baby
I'm afraid the truth might set you free
Lie to me
I'd rather hear you lying
Than to see you walk away
I can shut my eyes so I don't see
Even act like it's not killing me
Cause I'd rather hear you lie to me
Than to see you walk away
Now I can't let you know that I know
And I sure can't let the pain show
Yeah I'm strong, I can take it
Or at least I think I can fake it
Well I'm down to my last hope
I'm just hanging at the end of my rope
I can't slip and have you doubt me
I've gotta make you think that I believe
So come on and lie to me
Lie to me
I'd rather hear you lying
Than to see you walk away
Lie to me
Lie to me
I'd rather hear you lying
Than to see you walk away
Lie to me
Honey lie to me
I'd rather hear you lying
Than to see you walk away
Yeah lie to me
Honey lie to me
Dorothy Moore's song Lie to Me tells the story of a woman who's aware that her significant other is cheating, but she would rather him lie to her than to see him leave. The song's intro is filled with lines that suggest that her partner is trying to convince her that he's thinking only about her and that she's always on his mind. However, the woman in the song knows the truth and wonders if her partner thinks about her when he's with the other woman. Despite her fears and doubts, she decides to let it go and allow him to think that he's deceiving her. She doesn't want to face the reality and would rather stay in the illusion of being loved.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase 'lie to me' indicating the woman's preference of being deceived rather than to have to face the truth. She understands that the truth might set them both free, but she can't bear the thought of him leaving her. She would instead take the pain of being lied to than to see him walk away. The bridge of the song reveals the woman's inner turmoil and how difficult it is for her to fake her feelings. She doesn't want to show her partner that she knows he's cheating, but it's hurting her, and she's hanging by a thread. In the end, she asks him to lie to her, to keep up the facade and stay with her, even if it means he's lying.
