Night and Day
Dorsey Tommy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick, tick, tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall
Like the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops
When the summer show'are is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating
You, you, you.

Night and day
You are the one
Only you beneath the moon
And under the sun
Whether near to me or far
No matter, darling Where you are
I think of you
Night and day

Day and night
Why it is so
That this longing for you
Follows wherever I go.
In the roarin' traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you
Night and day

Night and day
Under the hide of me
There's an oh such a hungry
Yearnin' burnin' inside of me
And its torment won't be through
'Til you let me spend my life
Making love to you

Day and night
Night and day

Overall Meaning

The song "Night and Day" by Dorsey Tommy is a classic example of a love song that has stood the test of time. It is a testament to the depth and passion of a lover's feelings, making it a popular choice for wedding dance, prom night or any romantic event. The song sets a mood of longing and desire that is driven home by the lyrics and the melody. The song begins by describing the beat of the tom-tom, the tick of the clock, and the drip of the raindrop, and says that just like these things, the voice inside the singer is always repeating the name of the person he loves - "you, you, you". The chorus then repeats the phrase "Night and day, you are the one, only you beneath the moon and under the sun." The song describes how the singer thinks of this person always, whether close by or far away, in the bustle of the city or in the quiet of a lonely room.

Lovely performance of an immortal tune...

My favorite version of this song way far superior to Sinatra's later version.

MTN - A Rainbow Pastures Company

This was the original version from 1937 before Frank Sinatra came in to do his own version many years later. It was featured on the RCA Victor LP "This Is Tommy Dorsey - Vol. 2" in 1972.

Great song. I never knew it was originally from this era. I thought the original was made in the 60's - that's the version I have. Did Tommy Dorsey write this tune? This record sounds nice too : ) are you using the magnetic GE phono cartridge on this Garrard? thanx...

I am using a GE VRII magnetic cartridge. Best I've found.
