I Miss You Already
Dottie West Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I miss you already and you're not even gone
The time has come you're telling me goodbye I know that I can't stop you if I try
I've had way too many chances now I'll have to set you free
I watch you go too late I know how much you mean to me
Yes I miss you already don't know how I'll go on
I miss you already and you're not even gone

So kiss me once again and please don't cry I promise there'll be no more alibis
I'll have to find myself a way to face this loneliness

I watch you go too late I know I've lost my happiness
Yes I miss you already...

Overall Meaning

The song "I Miss You Already" by Dottie West is a heartfelt expression of sadness and regret from a narrator who realizes too late the true value of the departing loved one. The song begins with the poignant line "I miss you already and you're not even gone," setting the tone for the rest of the lyrics where the singer laments the imminent departure of their partner. The line speaks to the singer's deep regret and sense of loss before it has even occurred. The line also reveals the singer's recognition that their own actions have led to the end of the relationship and that they will have to bear the consequences.

The singer accepts that they cannot stop their partner from leaving - "I know that I can't stop you if I try" - and expresses their sadness at having had "way too many chances" to make things right. They watch their partner leave with a heavy heart, knowing they have lost someone they deeply care about. The second stanza sees the singer pleading with their partner not to cry, promising there will be "no more alibis." They acknowledge the loneliness that awaits them, knowing they have lost their happiness.

The song is a poignant reminder of how easily we can take those closest to us for granted - until it's too late. It's a reminder to treasure the people we love, to appreciate them while we have them, and to make sure we don't let them slip away. The song ends on a tragic note, leaving a sense of wonder at the finality of lost love.
