1) The Swiss duo of Felix Haug (drums and keyboards) and Kurt Maloo (guitar and vocals), formerly part of a trio called Ping Pong, scored an international hit in 1986 with the atmospheric ballad “The Captain of Her Heart” (#16 US pop, #4 US AC, #8 UK, #17 Canada) from their debut album Blue. It would be their only substantial hit, with “Devils Ball,” the lead single from 1987 follow-up album Dou3le, stalling at #71 in the UK and failing to chart in the US. The duo split in 1989 and Haug died following a heart attack in 2004.
2) Double is the stage name for Japanese R&B singer Takako Hirasawa and previously was a duo consisting of Hirasawa and her sister, Sachiko. “Shake” was the duo’s highest charting single (#21 Japan). After the death of her sister in May 1999, Takako continued as Double and is regarded as one of the first artists to bring American-style R&B to Japan. She also portrays a sexualized image, a rarity for Japanese artists.
Lakes in the Desert
Double Lyrics

We promised never to forget
We've been to places hot and dry
And we were never satisfied
Please take me back to where we've been
And show me now what we have seen
We've been to lakes in the desert
We stood in the rain on the moon
We knew the door to the treasure
But we've never ever been
Inside the holy room
We have been standing in the cold
And it felt not as we've been told
We had the chance to change the past
We had the chance to make it last
All the places we have seen
They do not look like in our dreams
And I don't understand
We've been to lakes in the desert
We stood in the rain on the moon
We knew the door to the treasure
But we've never ever been
Inside the holy room
The lyrics of Double's song "Lakes in the Desert" describe the experiences of the singer and the desire to return to the places they have been before. The first stanza describes their travels to different locations, referencing both wet and dry climates, and pledging to remember those places. The second stanza asks to be taken back to those places and shown what they have previously witnessed. The singer promises that they will understand what they have seen before.
The chorus describes the places they have been and experienced, such as "lakes in the desert," standing "in the rain on the moon," and being aware of "the door to the treasure," but unable to enter "the holy room." The third stanza talks about challenges they have experienced, like standing in the cold, and how these experiences were different than what they had expected. The last two lines suggest that the singer is struggling to understand their journey and the significance of the places they have seen previously.
Overall, the lyrics of "Lakes in the Desert" convey a sense of wonder, exploration, and the desire to understand what the singer has seen in their travels. The chorus describes places that seem impossible or otherworldly, and the final stanza suggests that these experiences were not what the singer had expected, leaving them struggling to make sense of it all.
