Bluebird
Doug Paisley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The song of the Bluebird
Buried in the dust
Did you once hear how she cried?
Though the years may have passed her
in tears and in laughter
There's a song that she left behind.
My father's own father
Sailed through the air
And he found in a maze in the sky.
But for all that surrounds us,
that anchors and binds us,
There's a song that we carry inside.

Chorus:
Oh, wild is the wind in the night.
Oh, wild am I.
I wait until the day begins,
and wild is my cry.
The song of the Bluebird
Carried on the wind
Leaving our worries behind,
Over highways and hilltops
we long to go,

But a song is all we can find.
[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Doug Paisley's song "Bluebird" talks about the history and legacy of a bluebird's song, buried in the dust. The bluebird's song may have been forgotten by time, but it still echoes through the tears and laughter of those who heard it. The second line of the stanza asks an unanswered question, "Did you once hear how she cried?" This statement is left hanging, possibly to make us think about how important it is to listen and cherish what is fragile, such as the bluebird's song. The stanza ends by saying that a song survives the passage of time.

The next stanza is more personal than the first, mentioning the singer's father's father, who flew through the air and found a maze in the sky. This could be a reference to the grandfather's aviator career, who fought through the war and reached new heights, both literally and figuratively. The stanza then mentions the anchors and bindings that surround us, possibly referring to the obstacles and challenges of daily life. But despite these restraints and responsibilities, the song remains inside us, waiting to be heard.

The chorus talks about the wildness that surrounds us, both externally and internally. The wind in the night is wild, and so is the singer, who waits until the day begins. The "wild cry" mentioned in the song could refer to the bluebird's song or the singer's own hunger for something more significant in life. The last stanza ends on a melancholy note, with the longing to leave our worries behind and journey over highways and hilltops. But in the end, all that remains is the bluebird's song, echoing through time.
