Remember watching this in theaters and this scene was easily the most memorable part of the movie. Just really well done. The way the camera pulls out demonstrates the mind boggling colossal nature of these machines on a planetary level. And the music perfectly captures the moment. My only gripe is that I wish the explosion was a little more.. eh substantial.

Titan AE and Event Horizon had it more accurate. But of course Hitchhiker's is a comedy and you can fly by throwing yourself at the ground and missing.

The way this scene is done has always stuck with me. Something about how efficiently and emotionless the vogons cary out the elimination of earth and human kind. Just another day at the office type of stuff. Pull up with the construction fleet, quick little courtesy speech, and then whoosh- billions of lives, every triumph and tribulation of humanity, and almost every trace of our existence extinguished in a few seconds. I saw this in theaters & that scene was so intense & awe inspiring. The theater was packed & there was total absolute silence when the earth exploded. No one was sipping their drink, digging for their snacks, nothing. Just everyone completely engrossed in the scene. It was amazing🌎💥👀

Look what happened in the new Resident Evil film, as well as the fact the both Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead have veered so far off from the original story. You simply have to take it for what it is, enjoy it for what it is, and if you still don't like it, then don't watch it. For every 'one' person who hated this movie, there are ten people who loved it. Sure, it's good chance they didn't see the TV series and read the books, but the movie still follows the basic storyline and it's not half bad.

@@prltqdf9 I had a relative who complained about the same thing, but I pointed out it was Douglas Adams who did the script, and he modified it over the years for various formats (tv, radio, audiobooks)… yes, there is a lot of stuff like describing the Vogon ships “They hung in the air in exactly the same way bricks don’t” that I would’ve liked but then it would have been a 4 hour movie. Which I would have happily sat through, but you sometimes have to appreciate what you get. Or don’t, I don’t care. The Zaphod head out the neck thing was a bad choice, and I preferred the TV Marvin (he has a cameo, though) so those take it to a 3 star but the visuals were amazing and conveyed the story better than previously possible

I think the very best version of the HHGTTG is the one it was written for - the BBC Radio 4 version in half hour episodes with the help of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Even in the late 1970s FM sound radio smashed this one out of the ballpark, from 1980 on, being one of the first radio shows to be mixed into four-channel Dolby Surround Sound. The books, films, cassette versions, cds, stageplays, games, comic books, tv version, dvds, film and towel came later.

As a bit of trivia, the UNDERTONES of the music are actually part of the JAMES BOND THEME! It's bit of a Director's nod to another great British work of art! PLUS this Guide to Galaxy shows a FOLDING e-SCREEN tablet/smartphone devive that pre-dates the modern folding screen by almost 15 years!

I love this film so much. I know there's naysayers who say "it deviates too much from the source material" (it really doesn't. It's actually fairly spot on for the most part, and even the new parts or parts that deviate from the book were written by Douglas Adams himself, specifically for the film!) but there's so much about it that's just perfect!

I mean, the casting, for one! Martin Freeman, Mos Def, Stephen Fry, Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, John Malkovich, Bill Nighy, Alan Rickman as Marvin, (even Warwick Davis is inside the costume!).....cameos from Bill Bailey, Helen Mirren and the League of Gentlemen....you couldn't piece together a more perfect cast if you tried!

It's utterly criminal that that cast never got to make the planned sequels! It could have been the greatest (and only) 5-film trilogy ever made!

Well that depends on your opinion of the term “alien” God is technically an alien and he created everything, we will never be more advanced than him. Don't care what anyone says! This was a darn good movie. Yes, it took some liberties and pulled some omissions. But it's the same thing as looking at James Gunn's work with Guardians of The Galaxy. The different interpretation WORKED! I honestly wish we'd have gotten at least one more of the books done like this.

I feel like they could have just moved it elsewhere. If they also grabbed the sun and moon along for the journey, that would be greatly helpful, but really, with all that tech on board, they could very easily and very quickly transport the whole planet somewhere with an equally useful star and satellite that can be adjusted to bob somewhere just about as precisely as our old ones. Really, quite inconsiderate of them, they should have at least given the humans an opportunity to petition some kind of appeal or request for transportation or relocation. Thoughtless and inconsiderate bureaucrats.

the appeals forms are handily just a few lightyears away at their offices. its the apathetic humans who didnt bother to check :P.
this mirrors arthur's problem earlier in the story. his house was set for demolition but he didnt get the notice.
