Shake it loose and let it fall
Layin' soft upon my skin
Like the shadows on the wall
Come and lay down by my side
Till the early mornin' light
All I'm takin' is your time
I don't care who's right or wrong
I don't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow
Lord tonight I need a friend
Yesterday is dead and gone
And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone
"Help Me Make It Through The Night" by Douglas Miller is a touching song that expresses the yearning for companionship in a moment of loneliness. The first verse describes a physical connection between the two lovers, with the singer asking the partner to let their hair down, as a metaphor for loosening up and revealing their true self. The ribbon falling softly on the singer's skin is a symbol of intimacy and comfort. The shadows on the walls might hint at the temporary, illusory nature of the moment, but they also create a cozy, private atmosphere that enhances the lovers' feelings.
Later, the chorus reveals the urgency and fragility of the singer's situation. He is not concerned about assigning blame or analyzing their relationship, but instead seeks solace in the present moment. The line "help me make it through the night" is both a plea and an affirmation of the unifying power of physical touch and emotional connection. The verse regarding yesterday's demise and tomorrow's obscurity reflects the singer's feeling of being caught in a limbo where only the immediate presence of his lover can offer relief.
This song can be seen as a timeless exploration of human vulnerability and companionship, as it appeals to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. It highlights the importance of human touch, empathy, and emotional resilience in moments of despair.
