Alone
Downface Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been a long day, at the bottom of the hill
She died of a broken heart
She told me I was living in the past
Drinking from a broken glass

I'm Alone (I never want to be alone)
Now I (Now I) turn to face the cold
I'm Alone (I never want to be alone)
Now I (Now I) turn to travel home

I walked down to the other end today
Just to catch those last few rays
But I held out my hands and slowly waved goodbye
I turn my eyes up to the sky

I'm Alone (I never want to be alone)
Now I (Now I) turn to face the cold
I'm Alone (I never want to be alone)
Now I (Now I) turn to travel home

She'll come back to me
She'll come back to me
All alone in his misery
She'll come back to me

I held out my hands to the light and I watched it die
I know, that I was part to blame
But I've done my time
And I Never want to spend my life alone

I'm alone (I never want to be alone)
Now I (Now I) turn to face the cold

I'm Alone (I never want to be alone)
Now I (Now I) turn to travel home

Overall Meaning

In "Alone" by Downface, the singer describes their loneliness and feelings of isolation. The lyrics start by setting the scene of a long day at the bottom of a hill, where the singer reveals that someone they knew died of a broken heart. This tragic event leads to the realization that the singer is living in the past, and drinking from a broken glass - a metaphor for their own emotional state. The chorus repeats the sentiment that the singer never wants to be alone, and as the song continues, they describe walking to the other end of something (perhaps a pier or a field) to enjoy the last bit of sunshine before it fades away. But even in this moment of beauty, the singer can't escape their loneliness - they imagine waving goodbye to the light, and turning their eyes up to the sky.

Despite the sadness, there is a glimmer of hope in the song. The singer believes that the person who died of a broken heart will come back to them, perhaps in the form of memories or dreams. There is also a sense that the singer has learned from their mistakes - they know that they were partly to blame for their current state, but they have "done their time" and refuse to spend their life alone. The final chorus repeats the theme of the song, but with a sense of determination - the singer may be alone, but they are not giving up hope.

Overall, "Alone" is a poignant song about the struggle to connect with others and the fear of being alone. It acknowledges the pain of loss and regret, but also emphasizes the importance of moving forward and finding a way out of the darkness.

YES, we did write 'Alone'"
Sadly, most people believe that one of the most popular songs by Downface, Alone, is both written and performed by Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam.

The members of Downface all played in different bands before joining together in February of 1997. They met in Madison, WI through an ad placed in a local music store. With almost identical tastes in music the chemistry was there from the start. Due to the difficulty of establishing a foothold in the music industry from Wisconsin, the band balanced their time over the next year by performing covers as well as writing their own material. In May of '98, they went into Capital Studios in Madison, Wisconsin to record their first CD, Confidence. The disk was released in July of that year. Since then, the band has been playing clubs in Madison, Milwaukee, and several other cities in southern Wisconsin.

ALBUMS:
- Confidence (1998)
- Within (2002)

BAND MEMBERS:
Tim Anderson - Rhythm, Lead Guitars and Lead Vocals
Rob Hammond - Rhythm Guitar
Joe Violetto - Bass
Russ Gray - Drums

PAW, Sugartooth, Downface, Dandelion, Another Animal. For all the talent Grunge produced some bands were criminally overlooked and eventually forgotten entirely.

It's a shame these guys never made it big, I couldn't even find who was in the band on Google, nor a Wikipedia page. It's a miracle that Spotify randomly put them on a playlist. I can kinda hear how people would confuse them for Pearl Jam or AIC but to me, they sound more like Days of The New than anyone else. I can't imagine any new music coming from them, but I hope the members are doing well now. Probably doing normal people stuff; settling down, having kids, all that jazz. Even if they're not recognized nearly enough, I'm glad I discovered the music :)
