Sadly, most people believe that one of the most popular songs by Downface, Alone, is both written and performed by Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam.
The members of Downface all played in different bands before joining together in February of 1997. They met in Madison, WI through an ad placed in a local music store. With almost identical tastes in music the chemistry was there from the start. Due to the difficulty of establishing a foothold in the music industry from Wisconsin, the band balanced their time over the next year by performing covers as well as writing their own material. In May of '98, they went into Capital Studios in Madison, Wisconsin to record their first CD, Confidence. The disk was released in July of that year. Since then, the band has been playing clubs in Madison, Milwaukee, and several other cities in southern Wisconsin.

Confidence
I don't know what I feel
I don't know what I feel
repeat
Thinking of the times I had
Wondering If I will ever again
Running circles in my head
Yet I need this
Confidence I always used to know exactly how to feel
but now I have no
Confidence It all seems jumbled in my mind
But that's why I'm
Thinking of the times I had
Wondering If I will ever again
Running Circles in my head
Wondering If I'll ever love again
Yet I need this
The song "Confidence" by Downface is a contemplative piece that deals with the uncertainty and confusion that arises when someone loses their confidence. The repetition of the word "confidence" in the lyrics reflects the theme of the song, where the singer is struggling to find a solid footing in their own emotional landscape. The opening lines, "Confidence / Confidence / I don't know what I feel / I don't know what I feel," sets the tone for the song, where the singer is struggling to come to terms with their own emotional state.
The following lines, "Thinking of the times I had / Wondering if I will ever again / Running circles in my head / Wondering if I'll ever love again," intensify the sense of confusion and uncertainty that the singer is feeling. They are clearly nostalgic for a time when they felt more confident, but they are not sure how to get back to that place. This is reflected in the lines, "But now I have no / Confidence / It all seems jumbled in my mind / But that's why I'm."
The song paints a picture of someone who is lost and searching for something to cling onto, a sense of self that they can be confident in. The repetition of the phrase "Thinking of the times I had / Wondering if I will ever again / Running circles in my head / Wondering if I'll ever love again" reinforces the searching, circling, and questioning that the singer is going through. The final line, "Yet I need this," suggests that even though the singer is lost and unsure, they are committed to the process of finding themselves and reestablishing confidence.
