Sadly, most people believe that one of the most popular songs by Downface, Alone, is both written and performed by Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam.
The members of Downface all played in different bands before joining together in February of 1997. They met in Madison, WI through an ad placed in a local music store. With almost identical tastes in music the chemistry was there from the start. Due to the difficulty of establishing a foothold in the music industry from Wisconsin, the band balanced their time over the next year by performing covers as well as writing their own material. In May of '98, they went into Capital Studios in Madison, Wisconsin to record their first CD, Confidence. The disk was released in July of that year. Since then, the band has been playing clubs in Madison, Milwaukee, and several other cities in southern Wisconsin.

I see the brightness of you
Try to spend my pain in you
It's all I've wanted, All this time
To travel the world with you
Is god up there watching you?
To spend a life with you
But the end is so much nearer
The sky goes on forever in my mind and I can see it's gray
If all the reasons could be shown, and I could see you in the light
The flower in the pouring rain, would not be crushed beneath the rock
I'd die for you
Why do the seasons change, and why must it ever rain?
Why must the weekends end, and why must the sunset ever turn to night?
I don't know, why this all happens to me
Still I go on, I travel always towards the sea
I'd die for you
All's I ever wanted was for you to see
Before you my life was misery
As the river flows to the sea
I hear you calling back for me
I'd die for you
The lyrics of Downface's "Ocean" paint a picture of a person who is consumed by the love they feel for someone else. The opening lines describe the singer as being encompassed by "circling colors" while also being able to see the "brightness" of the person who they desire. The lines "It's all I've wanted, all this time / To travel the world with you" speak to the powerful sense of longing that the singer feels. They see being able to travel the world with their love interest as the ultimate dream, the ultimate goal.
However, despite this hopeful tone, there are also undercurrents of sadness and resignation. The singer wonders if "god up there [is] watching you," highlighting the sense of external forces impacting their relationship, and acknowledges that "the end is so much nearer." The final lines, "I'd die for you / All's I ever wanted was for you to see / Before you my life was misery / As the river flows to the sea // I hear you calling back for me / I'd die for you" speak to the all-consuming nature of the singer's love. They are willing to do anything for their love interest, even die for them.
Overall, "Ocean" is a song about the power of love and the lengths that people will go to in order to be with the ones they love. It combines a sense of hopeful longing with a more somber acceptance of the fact that love is not always easy.
