Fame
Dr. Dre Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fame makes a man take things over
Fame lets him loose, hard to swallow
Fame puts you there where things are hollow (fame)
Fame, it's not your brain, it's just the flame
That burns your change to keep you insane (fame)

Fame, (fame) what you like is in the limo
Fame, (fame) what you get is no tomorrow
Fame, (fame) what you need you have to borrow Fame
Fame, (fame) it's mine, it's mine, it's just his line
To bind your time, it drives you to crime (fame)

Is it any wonder I reject you first?
Fame, fame, fame, fame
Is it any wonder you are too cool to fool? (fame)
Fame, bully for you, chilly for me
Got to get a rain check on pain (fame)

Fame
Fame, fame, fame
Fame, fame, fame
Fame, fame, fame, fame
Fame, fame, fame, fame
Fame, fame, fame

Fame, what's your name?
Fame

Overall Meaning

The song "Fame" by Dr. Dre is a commentary on the corrupting influence of fame in society. Throughout the song, Dre highlights the negative effects of being famous and how it changes people who are not equipped to handle it. The opening lyrics, "Fame makes a man take things over, fame lets him loose, hard to swallow," conveys how fame can give someone immense power and wealth, but it also can be a burden that is difficult to handle.

Dre goes on to discuss how fame can make someone lose touch with reality and hollow out their lives. The line, "Fame puts you there where things are hollow," implies that fame can bring material success, but at the expense of one's true self. This idea of losing oneself is further suggested when Dre sings, "Fame it's not your brain, it's just the flame that burns your change to keep you insane." Here he is saying that fame, instead of nurturing one's abilities, is a destructive force that can ruin the very person being elevated.

The final verse of the song sees Dre questioning whether fame is worth pursuing or even desirable. The line "Is it any wonder I reject you first?" suggests that Dre sees the pursuit of fame as a futile effort that ultimately leads to disappointment, loneliness, and corruption. In the end, the chorus repeats the word "fame" almost like a question, making the listener wonder whether seeking fame is worth the cost.

This was around '97. Dre was trying to get away from gangsta rap and do some different things, unfortunately he got hit by the "crabs in a basket" mentality parts of the Black community and they started calling him a sellout so he decided to go back to the gangsta stuff.
