Sweet Transvestite
Dr. Frank and Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How do you do I,
See you've met my,
Faithful handyman

He's just a little brought down
Because when you knocked
He thought you were the candyman
Don't get strung out, by the way I look
Don't judge a book by it's cover
I'm not much of a girl, by the light of day
But by night I'm one hell of a lover

I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Sensational, Transylvania

Let me show you around
play you a sound
You look like you're both pretty groovy

Or if you want something visual
That's not too abysmal
We could take in an old Steve Reeves movie

Well you got caught with a flat, well how bout that
Well, babies, don't you panic
By the light of the night it'll all seem alright
I'll get you a satanic mechanic

I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Sensational, Transylvania

Why don't you stay for the night

Or maybe a bite

I could show you my favourite obsession
I've been making a man
With blond hair and a tan
And he's good for relieving my . . . tension

I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Sensational, Transylvania
I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Sensational, Transylvania

So- come up to the lab
And see what's on the slab
I see you shiver with antici . . . pation

But maybe the rain isn't really to blame

So I'll remove the cause
But not the symptom

Overall Meaning

The song "Sweet Transvestite" from the musical "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is sung by the character Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a flamboyant transvestite from the castle in Transylvania. In the first verse, he introduces himself and his handyman, who was momentarily disappointed when the visitor turned out not to be delivering candy. He then addresses the visitor's potential judgment of his appearance and gender identity, reassuring them that he is not to be judged by his exterior. By day he may not seem like much of a woman, but by night he is an exciting and passionate lover.

The chorus, "I'm just a sweet transvestite from Sensational, Transylvania" repeats Dr. Frank's Transylvanian home and gender identity as he proudly introduces himself. He beckons the visitor to join him in some entertainment, whether it be touring the lab or watching a movie with him. The visitor's car trouble is also addressed and Dr. Frank offers to fix it, which suggests he has some unusual skills.

@Hannah Burke He was relevant up until his death. One of the most iconic and well known artists of the 70’s and 80’s. I was born in the early 2000’s but Bowie’s work, especially his earlier recordings, made a big impact on my childhood, as well as my parents, and my grandparents before that as teenagers and young adults. I guess it all depends on the music you’re raised with

YES THIS IS LITERALLY WHAT I THOUGHT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE FILM!
