Dr. Hook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's busy, too busy to come to the phone"
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's trying, to start a new life of her own"
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's happy so why don't you leave her alone?"
And the operator says
"Forty cents more, for the next three minutes"

Please Mrs. Avery, I've just got to talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell her
Goodbye

Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's packing, she's gonna be leaving today"
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's marrying, a fellow down Galveston-Way"
Sylvia's mother says "Please don't say nothing to make her start crying and stay"
And the operator says
"Forty cents more, for the next three minutes"

Please Mrs. Avery, I've just got to talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell her
Goodbye

Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's hurrying she's catching the nine o'clock train"
Sylvia's mother says "Take your umbrella, 'cause Sylvia it's starting to rain"
And Sylvia's mother says "Thank you for calling and sir won't you come back again"
And the operator says
"Forty cents more for the next three minutes"

Please Mrs. Avery, I've just got to talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell her
Goodbye

Tell her goodbye
Please, tell her goodbye

Overall Meaning

The song "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook tells a story of a man who is desperately trying to get in touch with Sylvia, his former lover. However, every time he calls, Sylvia's mother answers and refuses to connect him to her. The first verse introduces us to Sylvia's mother, who tells the man that Sylvia is too busy to come to the phone and is trying to start a new life. She tells him to leave Sylvia alone because she is happy. However, the operator interrupts and requests more money for additional talking minutes.

The second and third verses reveal that Sylvia is packing and getting ready to leave to marry someone in Galveston. Sylvia's mother doesn't want the man to say anything that could make her change her mind and stop crying. Finally, Sylvia's mother tells him that Sylvia is catching the 9 o'clock train and thanks him for calling before hanging up. Throughout the song, the man begs and pleads with Sylvia's mother to let him talk to her for a moment to say goodbye.

The desperation and sadness in the man's voice reveal the depth of feeling he has for Sylvia. Despite their past, he still cares for her and wants to say a proper goodbye. The repetition of the chorus reinforces his plea and highlights the frustration he feels at not being able to reach her.

I love this song, it reminds me of when l was 16 yrs old and my ❤️ Heart and the love of my life just was leaving for Viet Nam war, my mother would not let me talk to him. I wanted to die, l did not know if my son or l would ever see him again. Lucky my son saw him once and I never got to see him again. I just died for a very long time, then when l was 32 l met another man who healed my broken ❤️ Heart. God bless you Dr Hook for your song. JOB

This song was released the week I was discharged from the army. I sent a letter every week to the girl I loved but her mother never gave them to her. Her mother wanted her to marry a man with money and not someone who loved and cherished her. She was abused mentally and physically for almost 25 years until she finally had enough. After her divorce I finally reunited with her and the last 21 years have been the best years of our lives. If you truly love someone, don't give up. My father told me the night we broke up in 1971, Son, if it's meant to be, it will happen, just be patient.
