The Millionaire
Dr. Hook Lyrics

(Before we begin, thank you
Thank you, oh thank you, thank you
Thank you)

I'm not a bad person, I don't drink and I don't kill
I've got no evil habits and I probably never will
I don't sing like Elvis Presley, I can't dance like Fred Astaire
But there's one thing in my favour, (what) I'm a millionaire (that's beautiful)

And I got more money than a horse has hairs
'Cause my rich old uncle died and answered all my prayers
But having all this money is gonna bring me down
If you ain't with me honey to help me spread it around

I could get myself a nose job, I could diet for a year
But I'll never be Robert Redford, 'cause I'm much too fond of beer
Please don't misunderstand me it's not love I'm trying to buy
It's just I got all this here money and I'm a pretty ugly guy

But I got more money than a horse has hairs
'Cause my rich old uncle died and answered all my prayers
But having all this money is gonna bring me down
If you ain't with me honey to help me spread it around

I don't mind if you love me for my money
If you love me for whatever else I've got
Except for all this stuff I'm alone in Fort Knox
I don't guess I'm doing all that hot

But I got more money than a horse has hairs
'Cause my rich old uncle died and answered all my prayers
But having all this money is gonna bring me down
If you ain't with me honey to help me spread it around

Hey you, come here babe

Stop crying
Put a quarter in the jukebox

Overall Meaning

The Millionaire by Dr. Hook is a song about a man who has inherited a lot of money after his rich uncle's death. He sings that he is not a bad person, and he doesn't drink or kill. He has no evil habits, and he probably never will. He knows that he doesn't have the looks of a Hollywood actor or the skills of a dancer, but what he has in his favor is that he is now a millionaire.

The man sings that he has more money than a horse has hairs after his inheritance, and he got all that money after his prayers for his rich old uncle's death were answered. However, he is aware that having all this money is going to bring him down if he doesn't have someone with him to help him spread it around. He feels that he could get a nose job or diet for years to look better, but he knows that he is pretty ugly. The man understands that people might love him for his money, but he doesn't want to buy love.

In the third verse, the man pleads with his love interest not to cry because he has enough money to put a quarter in the jukebox. The song ends on a fun note as he asks her to dance with him. The lyrics are witty, and the song is a light-hearted commentary on how money changes people's perception of you.

I'm not a bad person,

I got no evil habits, and I probably never will.
I don't sing like Elvis Presley,

But there's one thing in my favor,
I'm a millionaire!
And I got more money,
Than a horse has hairs.
Cause my rich old uncle died,
And answered all my prayers!
Having all this money,
Is going to bring me down.
If you ain't with me honey,
To help me spread it around!
I could get myself a nose job,

Please don't misunderstand me,
It's not love I'm trying to buy.
It's just I got all this here money,

And I got more money,
Than a horse has hairs.
Cause my rich old uncle died,
And answered all my prayers!
I don't mind if you love me for my money,
If you love me for whatever else I got.
But 'cept for all this stuff, I'm a lonely Fort Knox,
I don't guess I'm doing all that hot.
And I got more money,
Than a horse has hairs.
Cause my rich old uncle died,
And answered all my prayers!
Money, money, money, money................

Because of their antics and enjoying themselves so much it is often overlooked that every last member of the Dr. throughout the years were incredibly talented musicians.

I was just thinking, all joking aside, this is a great vocal

Without a doubt - Ray and Dennis are incredibly talented singers, who sing with emotion and humour. It wouldn’t work for them without their awesome musicians, -their music is awesome

Jonny Andersson

Indeed!
