Dr. John began making his own idiosyncratic music in the 1960s. Along with Professor Longhair, Dr. John is heir to the rich New Orleans tradition. He is perhaps best known for "Right Place, Wrong Time", an international hit in 1973, reissued and used on soundtracks many times since.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, his professional musical career began as a session musician in New Orleans in the 1950s. Early on he also played guitar and was often known as Mac Rebennack. He switched to the bass ("the lowest time of my life"), and then the piano after his index finger was nearly shot off protecting his bandmate and longtime friend Ronnie Barron. He gained fame beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with music that combined New Orleans-style rhythm and blues with psychedelic rock and stage shows that bordered on voodoo religious ceremonies, including elaborate costumes and headdress. For a time he was billed as Dr. John, The Night Tripper. The name "Dr. John" came from a legendary Louisiana voodoo practitioner from the start of the 19th century.
Dr. John has also done vocals for Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits' "Luv dat chicken..." jingle, as well as the theme song ("My Opinionation") for the early-1990s television sitcom Blossom. His movie credits include Martin Scorsese's documentary The Last Waltz (in which he joins The Band for a performance of his song "Such a Night") and Blues Brothers 2000 (in which he joins the fictional band The Louisiana Gator Boys to perform the song "New Orleans"). In the 2009 Disney film The Princess and the Frog, Dr. John sings the opening tune, "Down in New Orleans".
In January 2008 Mac Rebennack, Dr. John, was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame.
Save The Bones For Henry Jones

We'll eat some food that's rare
And at the head of the table
We'll place brother Henry's chair
Invite all the local big dogs
We'll laugh and talk and eat
But we'll save the bones for Henry Jones
Cause Henry don't eat no meat
Today I'll go to market
Buy up a lotta fish
Well, that will thrill brother Henry
Cause fish is his special dish
Get a large can of molasses
Have something really sweet
But we'll save the bones for Henry Jones
Cause Henry don't eat no meat
Henry is not a drinker
He rarely takes a nip
He don't need a napkin
Cause the things he eats don't drip â?? blip!
One day we had a banquet
It really was a bake
They started off with short ribs
Then finished off with steak
But when the feast was over
Brother Henry just kept his seat
And we served the bones to Henry Jones
Cause Henry don't eat no meat
Our banquet was most proper
Right down to demitasse
From soup to lox and bagels
And pheasant under glass â?? class!
We thought the chops were mellow
He said his chops were beat â?? reet!
We served the bones to Henry Jones
Cause Henry don't eat no meat
He's an egg man
Henry don't eat no meat
He loves a pullet
Henry don't eat no meat
A vegetarian
Henry?
Coming mother!
Soup's on
The song "Save The Bones For Henry Jones" by Dr. John is a light-hearted ode to a vegetarian friend, Henry Jones. The lyrics describe a supper party where rare food is served, big dogs are invited, and Henry's chair is at the head of the table. However, despite the fanciness and extravagance of the event, the guests are reminded to save the bones for Henry Jones because he doesn't eat meat. The song is full of gags about Henry's diet, such as his love for fish, molasses, and eggs.
The lyrics also highlight Henry's habits, such as his sobriety and cleanliness when it comes to eating. Dr. John sings that Henry is not a drinker and doesn't need a napkin because "the things he eats don't drip". The song suggests that Henry is not just a quirky friend but also a respected one, as he is given a place of honor at the dinner party, and his dietary needs are accommodated without fuss.
Overall, "Save The Bones For Henry Jones" is a humorous and catchy tune that celebrates friendship and tolerance. It invites us to appreciate not just the diversity of people but also the diversity of diets and lifestyles.
