Dr. John began making his own idiosyncratic music in the 1960s. Along with Professor Longhair, Dr. John is heir to the rich New Orleans tradition. He is perhaps best known for "Right Place, Wrong Time", an international hit in 1973, reissued and used on soundtracks many times since.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, his professional musical career began as a session musician in New Orleans in the 1950s. Early on he also played guitar and was often known as Mac Rebennack. He switched to the bass ("the lowest time of my life"), and then the piano after his index finger was nearly shot off protecting his bandmate and longtime friend Ronnie Barron. He gained fame beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with music that combined New Orleans-style rhythm and blues with psychedelic rock and stage shows that bordered on voodoo religious ceremonies, including elaborate costumes and headdress. For a time he was billed as Dr. John, The Night Tripper. The name "Dr. John" came from a legendary Louisiana voodoo practitioner from the start of the 19th century.
Dr. John has also done vocals for Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits' "Luv dat chicken..." jingle, as well as the theme song ("My Opinionation") for the early-1990s television sitcom Blossom. His movie credits include Martin Scorsese's documentary The Last Waltz (in which he joins The Band for a performance of his song "Such a Night") and Blues Brothers 2000 (in which he joins the fictional band The Louisiana Gator Boys to perform the song "New Orleans"). In the 2009 Disney film The Princess and the Frog, Dr. John sings the opening tune, "Down in New Orleans".
In January 2008 Mac Rebennack, Dr. John, was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame.
What A Wonderful World
Dr. John Lyrics

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world
The song "What A Wonderful World" by Dr. John featuring Nicholas Payton and The Blind Boys Of Alabama, is a beautiful ode to the beauty and simplicity of life. The opening lines "I see trees of green, red roses too, I see them bloom for me and you" brings into focus the sights around us, the nature coming to life and beauty of flora around us. The phrase "And I think to myself what a wonderful world" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the happiness and contentment that the visual imagery of the world brings forth.
The second verse brings in the element of the sky, its bright blue color and white clouds, that marks the start of the day, which later turns into a dark night filled with serenity. The line "The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky, are also on the faces of people going by" talks about not only the natural beauty but the beauty in the relationships we have. The people we meet, their colorful personalities, and the relationships we have with them make life beautiful. The lyrics "I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do, they're really saying I love you" emphasis on how even the simplest gesture of greeting can be filled with love and affection. The last portion of the song talks about the beauty of growth, watching babies cry and then grow, reflect on the passing of life and the power of experiences that comes along with it.
Overall, the song is a testament to the beautiful moments of everyday life and the joy it brings to us. It encourages the listener to cherish their surroundings and everything that comes with it, to find true happiness in the simplicities of life.

What a wonderful contrast between the raw looseness of the Good Doctor and The Blind Boys – Nicholas Payton, even a bit, too, and the tight, crisp, horn chart. Holy shit! This really works it. The AllMusic site says: “...Finely arranged by trombonist and co-producer Sarah Morrow. ...” Tough stuff, Ms. Morrow.
