Daydream
Dr. Lopez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the blue bird as she sings
The six-o'clock alarm would never ring
But six rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
The shaving razor's cold and it stings

Cheer up sleepy Jean
Oh what can it mean to a
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen

You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, our good times start and end
Without all I want to spend
But how much baby do we really need

Cheer up sleepy Jean
Oh what can it mean to a

Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen

Overall Meaning

The song "Daydream" by Dr. Lopez is a playful, upbeat tune that expresses the wistful feeling of wanting to escape everyday life and responsibilities in favor of daydreaming. The first verse describes the singer's desire to hide under the wings of a blue bird and escape the sound of the six o'clock alarm. However, the reality is that the alarm rings and the singer must rise and face the day. The second verse speaks to the idea of nostalgia and how a love interest once viewed the singer as a white knight on a steed, but now sees the singer's true, happy nature. The chorus then encourages the listener to "cheer up sleepy Jean," suggesting that the listener can indulge in daydreams while still enjoying life's simple pleasures.

The line "Oh what can it mean to a Daydream believer and a Homecoming queen" refers to the idea that everyone has to face reality at some point, but there is still room for imagination and dreaming. The phrase "Daydream believer" is a nod to the belief that daydreaming is a form of positive thinking that can help one achieve their goals. The reference to a "Homecoming queen" is interesting as it is a nod to the 1965 movie "The Homecoming," which was the pilot to the popular television show "The Waltons." In the movie, the character Olivia comes home and is crowned the "Homecoming Queen" of her small town.

Overall, "Daydream" is a fun, light-hearted song that encourages listeners to indulge in their daydreams while still appreciating the simple things in life.

Lupe is one of the greatest ever. This song is going over 99% people's
heads... First half of the 1st verse he's talking about the industry
(the robot) and how he has to keep them happy or they will drop him
since he can't have success without them. In the 2nd part he's talking
about how society is constructed while comparing each section to a body.
At the bottom are prostitutes, crime & police and at the face of
society are the entertainers (him self).

2nd verse is a continuation of the first half of the 1st verse and states what
entertainers are doing to keep the industry (robot) happy (promoting
evil by making drugs, alcohol, guns & sex cool). What entertainers
are showing you is evil (fire) and fake (smoke machines and simulated
rain) but is at the same time done in a way that's not harsh enough to
upset the masses. The sleeping (ignorant) baby (you) is being influenced
by him (the entertainer) and his robot (the industry) as they grow up.
He finishes the verse by saying he turned his back on promoting these
things and draws parallels to television which also influenced (raised)
him & us.

Daydream
I fell asleep amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

[Verse 1: Lupe Fiasco]
As I spy from behind my giant robot's eyes
I keep him happy 'cause I might fall out if he cries
Scared of heights, so I might pass out if he flies
Keep him on autopilot 'cause I can't drive
Room enough for one, I tell my homies they can't ride
Unless they sitting on the shoulders, but that's way too high
Let's try not to step on the children
The news cameras filming this walking project building
Now there's hoes selling holes like right around the toes
And the crackheads beg at about the lower leg
There's crooked police that's stationed at the knees
And they do drive-bys like up and down the thighs
And there's a car chase going on at the waist
Keep a vest on my chest, I'm sitting in my room
As I'm looking out the face, something to write about
I still got some damage from fighting the White House
Just a

[Verse 2: Lupe Fiasco]
Now come on everybody, let's make cocaine cool
We need a few more half-naked women up in the pool
And hold this MAC-10 that's all covered in jewels
And can you please put your titties closer to the 22s?
And where's the champagne? We need champagne
Now look as hard as you can with this blunt in your hand
And now hold up your chain, slow-motion through the flames
Now cue the smoke machines and the simulated rain
But not too loud cause the baby's sleeping
I wonder if it knows what the world is keeping
Up both sleeves while he lay there dreaming
Me and my robot tip-toe 'round, creeping
I had to turn my back on what got you paid
I couldn't see, had the hood on me like Abu Ghraib
But I'd like to thank the streets that drove me crazy
And all the televisions out there that raised me

Do you know why Jill Scott is underated. It's because no one seems to recognize and appreciate her unique vocal agility. Which is her uncanny ability to seemlessly transition from angelic vocal expression to the powerful execution of strong dynamic range. In my personal opinion she has achieved mastery over this skill.
