Heat of the Moment
Drake Lyrics

All the school kids are so sick of books and learnin'
They don't read anymore, they don't even read anymore
They just wanna be like all the rappers that I can't stand
Niggas we don't need anymore
All the niggas we don't need anymore
And all the cops are still hangin' out at the doughnut shops
Talkin' 'bout how the weather's changin'
The ice is meltin' as if the world is endin'

She asked me
"Who are you gonna be when it's all over? When it's all over?"
She asked me
"Who are you gonna be when it's all over? When it's all over?"
I don't wanna think about that right now
Heat of the moment
Heat of the moment, girl, heat of the moment
I ain't even got a strap, if you think we really need one, I'm on it
The last man fucked up, I'll take it since he doesn't want it
Can't think straight in the heat of the moment, heat of the mo-
Heat of the moment

What are we even doing?

Ridin' clean
With you on my mind and I'm thinkin' dirty things
Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes Lord
I've seen some things
I wish we had met when I was in my teens
Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes Lord
'Cause these days I only know conditional love
I'm not used to settlin' down
I'm too used to switchin' it up, oh
And she says, "You don't how good it is to be you 'cause you're him"
And I say, "Well, goddamn"

Then ask myself
Who am I gonna be when it's all over? When it's all over?
Who am I gonna be when it's all over? When it's all over?
I don't wanna think about that right now
Heat of the moment
Heat of the moment, girl, heat of the moment
I ain't even got a strap if you think we really need one, I'm on it
The last man fucked up, I'll take it since he doesn't want it
Can't think straight in the heat of the moment, heat of the mo-
Heat of the moment

All of this, it's alcohol
It's our drugs, our weed
It's everything that you could ever imagine
Man, our sisters, our sisters
And our brothers, our brothers, need to stop this shit
They need to take a step up
Young girls are hot
And they will fuck anybody, anytime, anyway
Because they are so hot and young guys are
They are going for it
This shit has to stop, man
This shit has to stop
These people need to, uh, uh, uh, um, educate themselves
Yeah
Women are too fucking hot
Yeah, you're right
You're right
Alright man, well, shit, I just wanted-
They know they're too hot
They don't give a fuck
It's the heat of the moment
It's the heat of the moment and that's all it is
It's the heat of the moment
I agree
This shit, that's all it is
It's the heat of the moment
Be, be, a, be a 100% woman, or

Try to have, to be a 100% man
And use a fucking condom

Overall Meaning

In “Heat of the Moment,” Drake explores the theme of self-reflection and introspection in the midst of societal pressures to conform to specific cultural norms. He addresses the fact that school kids no longer read but instead aspire to be rappers, who do not have any substance in their music. He also addresses the lack of cops patrol and the melting of ice due to climate change. Amidst all these societal pressures and dilemmas, he talks about a woman who asks him who he would be when it’s all done, and he responds by saying he doesn't want to think about it because he is in the heat of the moment.

Drake also touches on the idea of unconditional and conditional love. That he is used to switching it up and not settling down, while the woman next to him tells him he doesn’t know how good it is to be him. The heat of the moment in this context could indicate that Drake is trying to enjoy his life to the fullest, and he doesn’t want to think about his future after the stage, fame, and performance. The song ends with him contemplating the idea that one should either be 100% woman or a 100% man and that they should use a condom.

Line by Line Meaning

All the school kids Are so sick of books and learnin' They don't read anymore They don't even read anymore They just wanna be Like all the rappers that I can't stand Niggas we don't need anymore All the niggas we don't need anymore And all the cops are still hangin' out at the doughnut shops Talkin' 'bout how the weather's changin' The ice is meltin' as if the world is endin'
The youth are ignoring education and are instead striving to emulate the image and lifestyle of rap artists who are no longer needed. While the cops are more focused on trivial things, like the weather, it seems the end is near as if the melting ice alludes to a grim future.

She asked me, who are you gonna be When it's all over? When it's all over?
She asks the question, who will you be when it's all over, after you've lived your life and potentially succeeded or failed at your ambitions.

I don't wanna think about that right now Heat of the moment Heat of the moment, girl, heat of the moment
I don't want to ponder the question right now, in the heat of the moment, where feelings and emotions can cloud our judgement.

I ain't even got a strap if you think we really need one I'm on it The last man fucked up, I'll take it since he doesn't want it Can't think straight in the heat of the moment, heat of the moment, heat of the moment, yeah
I'm willing to go get a firearm if it's necessary, even though I don't currently have one. I'll take charge since the previous person failed to do so. However, in the moment, our judgement may be impacted due to various factors.

What are we even doing?
Questioning our actions and reasoning, trying to determine if we're making the right choices or not.

Ridin' clean With you on my mind and I'm thinkin' dirty things Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes Lord I've seen some things I wish we had met when I was in my teens Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes Lord 'Cause these days I only know conditional love I'm not used to settlin' down I'm too used to switchin' it up, oh And she says, "You don't how good it is to be you cause you're him" And I say, "Well, goddamn"
Riding around, thinking of you and naughty thoughts, while reminiscing on my past and feeling regret on not meeting you when I was younger. My relationships have been insincere and lacking true affection, and I'm not used to settling down with anyone. She tells me that being myself is a great thing, and I reply in disbelief but satisfaction.

Who am I gonna be When it's all over? When it's all over?
Questioning again, who we will be at the end of everything, when our time here is over.

I don't wanna think about that right now Heat of the moment (heat) Heat of the moment, girl, heat of the moment (yeah) I ain't even got a strap if you think we really need one I'm on it (if we really need it) The last man fucked up, I'll take it since he doesn't want it Can't think straight in the heat of the moment, heat of the moment, heat of the moment, yeah (yeah)
Again stating we don't want to focus on the question right now in the heat of the moment, and saying that if it's necessary, I'll get a firearm. Taking charge since the last person failed to act. However, in the heat of the moment, clear thoughts may become elusive.

All of this, it's our all It's our drugs, our weed It's everything that you could ever imagine Man, our sisters, our sisters And our brothers, our brothers, need to stop this shit They need to take a step up Young girls are hot And they will fuck anybody, anytime, anyway Because they are so hot and young guys are They are going for it This shit has to stop, man This shit has to stop These people need to educate themselves Women are too fucking hot
Everything we do, our drug and weed use, it's everything we could ever imagine. Both men and women need to step up and end this behavior, as it's harmful. Women are especially tempting, and young people need education to make better decisions.

Yeah, you're right You're right Alright man, well, shit, I just wanted
Agreeing with the previous point made, and continuing the conversation.

They know they're too hot They don't give a fuck It's the heat of the moment It's the heat of the moment and that's all it is It's the heat of the moment
Young women know they're attractive and don't care about the consequences that come with promiscuous behavior. In the heat of the moment, it's just a temporary feeling that will pass.

This shit, that's all it is It's the heat of the moment Be be a 100% woman, or Try to have, to be a 100% man And use a fucking condom
It all just boils down to the heat of the moment, where we must either be a true woman or true man, and remember to use protection against unwanted consequences.

Amazing song, vocally and lyrically. "Who am I gonna be when this is all over?" That's the honesty that put Drake on top, what successful person doesn't ask themselves that at one point?

Clay Osiris
