EARTH
Dream Koala Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have you ever seen the lights
Of a thousand exploding suns?
Kingdoms and cathedrals under the ocean
Because no god can save us from ourselves
No god can save me from myself

So I will remember the earth as it was
And let my dead body floating in space
When my time will come

We can't escape from here
Our time has come

As we see the world collapsing so close from the end
Our time has come

Overall Meaning

Dream Koala's song EARTH discusses the concept of a world on the brink of collapse due to the actions of humanity, with the singer lamenting that even if there is a deity, they cannot save humanity from destruction because humanity is causing its own downfall. The song's opening lines speak of the beauty of the universe, referencing the visual spectacle of exploding suns. This can be seen as a juxtaposition with the destruction happening on Earth as humans destroy the planet slowly but surely. The line "Kingdoms and cathedrals under the ocean" is poignant because it suggests that even the most majestic and lofty human constructions will be swallowed up by the calamity eventually.

The song's chorus is particularly melancholic, with the lyrics understated but powerful: "We can't escape from here/Our time has come/As we see the world collapsing so close from the end/Our time has come." This reveals the singer's sense of resignation about the dire state of the planet and the fate of humanity. The final lines of the song are particularly haunting: "So I will remember the earth as it was/And let my dead body floating in space/When my time will come." It is a sobering vision of the Earth as a once-beautiful place that has been left behind in ruins.

The first time I listened to this song was when I was travelling around Iceland in the winter in -7°C, hiking the glaciers of Vatnajökull. The bitterness of the cold, the desolate icy tundras and the rare sighting of the aurora borealis in the night sky are the perfect setting to listen to this song.
