Over the course of various lineup changes, Petrucci and Myung have been the only two constant members, and Portnoy remained with the band until 2010, when he left to pursue other musical endeavors and he has since been replaced by Mangini. After a brief stint with Chris Collins, followed by Charlie Dominici (who was dismissed from Dream Theater not long after the release of their first album), LaBrie was hired as the band's singer in 1991. Dream Theater's first keyboardist, Kevin Moore, left the band after three albums and was replaced by Derek Sherinian in 1995 after a period of touring. After just one album with Sherinian, they replaced him with current keyboardist Jordan Rudess in 1999.
To date, Dream Theater has released fifteen studio albums. The band's highest-selling release is their second album Images and Words (1992), which reached No. 61 on the Billboard 200 chart. Both the albums Awake (1994) and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) also entered the charts at No. 32 and No. 46, respectively, and received critical acclaim. Their fifth album, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), was ranked number 95 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine's list of the greatest 100 guitar albums of all time. It was also ranked as the 15th Greatest Concept Album in March 2003 by Classic Rock Magazine.
As of 2018, Dream Theater has sold over 12 million records worldwide and has received three Grammy Award nominations (including one win in 2022). Along with Queensrÿche and Fates Warning, the band has been referred to as one of the "big three" of the progressive metal genre, responsible for its development and popularization.

I watch you
Show me the hurt
That haunts you
Would you despise the thrill
If all you hide were mine?
I can't hold on any longer
Echoes that deafen the mind
will bury my voice in their wake
Caught in a Web
Removed from the world
Hanging on by a thread
Spinning the lies
devised in my head
I've seen the path
the one you take
shows the truth
for you to make
This turn of phrase
we might not see
is the thirst of desire
found so easily
Try to push me 'round
the world some more
And make me live in fear
I bare all that I am
made of now
Attractive I don't care
'Cause even when I danced with life
no one was there to share
Does this voice the wounds of your soul?
Does this voice the wounds of your soul?
Caught in a Web
Removed from the world
Hanging on by a thread
Spinning the lies
devised in my head
Tried to live the life
you live and saw
It doesn't work for me
I bare all that I am
made of now
Attractive, I can't be
Inside the Dance of Life is one
I'll never hold to me
You can't heal the wounds of my soul.
You can't heal the wounds of my soul.
Caught in a Web
Removed from the world
Hanging on by a thread
Spinning the lies
devised in my head
Caught in a Web
Refused by the world
Hanging on by a thread
Spinning a cage
Denied and misread
The lyrics of Dream Theater's song Caught in a Web address the idea of inner turmoil and emotional pain that is hidden from the outside world. The singer is watching someone and asking them to show the hurt that haunts them, acknowledging that he shares in that pain. The second verse expresses the singer's feeling that he can't hold on any longer to his emotions, which are becoming increasingly strong as they echo in his mind. He feels as if he is caught in a web, removed from the rest of the world, and hanging on by a thread. The lies that he creates for himself are only making things worse. We, later on, see the singer discussing wanting to live a different life but also recognizing the impossibility of it.
The chorus repeats the idea of being caught in a web and removed from the world, which suggests a feeling of isolation and entrapment. The final verse rejects the idea that anyone else can heal the wounds of the singer's soul, emphasizing a sense of individuality and self-reliance. The song's lyrics provide an insight into the universal human experience of suffering and the difficulty of sharing that pain with others.
