Photographs
Dreamshade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Kevin:
Why has it all changed?
What have we lost? What have we gained?
Nothing of this will ever remain
only a bunch of child's memories
Why has it all changed?
What have I lost? and what have you gained?
Nothing of this will ever remain
only a bunch of child's memories hidden in shame
We used to stay together
dreaming of what we'd have become
We'd have been friends forever
What should I say now that you're gone?
Through my eyes you're fading
This is the way I feel
Why has it all changed?
What have we lost? What have we gained?
Nothing of this will ever remain
only a bunch of child's memories
Why has it all changed?
What have I lost? and what have you gained?
Nothing of this will ever remain
only a bunch of child's memories
I miss those times when we played as kids
No worries about our future, no enemies
Now I close my eyes

Fella:
Trying to go back then with my mind
Oh, how I wish we could live the old times again

Kevin:
Through my eyes you're fading
This is the way I feel
We can't stand here waiting
Why are we afraid if there's nothing but time between us
We can't stand here waiting
Nothing is changing
Will we ever meet again?

Fella:
Will we ever meet again?

What are we waiting for?
What are we so afraid of?

Overall Meaning

Dreamshade's song "Photographs" touches on the theme of nostalgia and the bittersweet memories of the past. The lyrics reveal a sense of loss and longing for a simpler time when the two main characters in the song were young and carefree. The song seems to ask the question of why things cannot remain the same and why the past cannot be relived. The opening lines of the song convey this message vividly, with Kevin asking why everything has changed, and what they have lost and gained. He suggests that nothing from the past will remain except for the fond memories that he holds onto.

The lyrics point out the inevitability of the changes that come with age and the progression of time. Kevin reminisces about the past, the times spent dreaming of the future alongside his friend, and the fun times they had playing as children. He laments the loss of an innocent time, free of worries and enemies, and how his friend is no longer present to share these memories with him. The song conveys a sense of regret that things have changed and they cannot undo the events that have brought them to where they are now.

The refrain, "Through my eyes, you're fading, this is the way I feel," emphasizes the feeling of loss and the sadness that the memories don't hold the same brightness they once did. The song acknowledges that while the past can be a beautiful place to visit mentally, it is impossible to live there forever. The ending of the song with Fella's verse speaks to the desire to move beyond the past and to make the most of the present and future.
