Why does a band give themselves this name? It signals: expensive, precious but fragile.
The two heads of Dresden China met in Frankfurt in 1984 to finally make their own dreams come true.
Ulrich Werdin (born in Munich), he began his career as a drummer, guitarist and later as a singer. He was not only interested in the music itself, but also in the art of recording and recording it. That's why he trained as a sound engineer. He is the singer of Dresden China.
A few days after meeting Werner Littau, Ulrich Werdin realized: If you can ever make the music you have in mind, you can do it with him as a partner.
Werner (son of a Russian musician) was obsessed with the urge to be on stage and has been making music since he was 14 years old. In order to survive, he played everything imaginable, from hard rock to dance music. However, he always nurtured the hope that one day he would be able to do what he really had in mind. He found the right partner in Ulrich Werdin.
From the very beginning, Dresden China wanted to set up something completely independent. So the first thing they did was put their heads together with Mary Susan Applegate. She is an American poet who lives in Frankfurt and wrote most of the lyrics for the debut LP. Dresden China wrote the music with the help of Günther Markert, Tommy Lohr, Lothar Krell and Lutz Sommer. Werdin's brother Theo produced it. The two China's definitely wanted an extremely modern sound, which is why the most modern studio equipment and experienced studio professionals were used. Nevertheless, it was the first duty to make the music catchy and lively. Both are quite afraid of retort production. That's why musician friends were hired, who formed a permanent backing band that also supported Dresden China on tours.
