End of the World
Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey it's the end of the world, now, haven't you heard, so,
Smoke em if you got em, boys and girls.
Say goodbye to the past, now, raise up your glass and,
revel while it lasts, it's the end of the world.

Sometimes I am afraid to die, my flesh and bones won't testify.
My enemies and friends share the same residence.
But don't eulogize on my behalf, I'm a long way from my epitaph.
I'm only getting started on this lost highway.
I am brave and I am not afraid.

Hey it's the end of the world, now, haven't you heard, so,
smoke em if you got em, boys and girls.
Say goodbye to the past, now, raise up your glass and,
revel while it lasts, it's the end of the world.

I am foolish, I am blind, lose my heart and lose my mind.
My soul feels like a trumpet on the battlefield.
Don't shower me with flatteries.
Ain't got no time for pleasantries.
Just give me the truth and set me free.

Hey it's the end of the world, now, haven't you heard, so,
Smoke em if you got em, boys and girls.
Say goodbye to the past, now, raise up your glass and,
revel while it lasts, it's the end of the world.

Go tell the congregation, we need a revelation.
Go tell the congregation, we need a revelation.

Hey it's the end of the world, now, haven't you heard, so,
smoke em if you got em, boys and girls.

Say goodbye to the past, now, raise up your glass and,
revel while it lasts, it's the end of the world.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors' song "End of the World" is a reflection on the inevitability of life's end. With lines that say "Say goodbye to the past, now, raise up your glass and, revel while it lasts, it's the end of the world" the song encourages listeners to let go of the worries of the past and embrace the present moment. The lines "I'm only getting started on this lost highway. I am brave and I am not afraid" suggest that even though life may end, it's important to continue and persevere through any journey. The song essentially urges individuals to appreciate every moment, even if it may seem like the end.

Throughout the song, Holcomb also acknowledges the need for truth and honesty. The lines "Just give me the truth and set me free" implies a desire to not have a sugar-coated explanation, but rather one that is real and raw.

Overall, the song's lyrics invoke feelings of recklessness, adventure, and a need to live fully before the end. It is a reminder that life is precious and fleeting, but it's also essential to be truthful and honest.

In his own words: "This is our take on the 'Eat, Drink, and Be Merry' for tomorrow you will die theme, except a big clarion call for community amidst the revelry, and a search for solidarity amidst the apocalyptic frenzy of the culture wars."
It calls for finding friendship and acceptance in this era of people using hateful words to pit people against eachother. "I am brave and I am not afraid." Eventhough it sometimes might seem that all is lost, Drew tells us we need to keep on fighting like it's our last day ever, so tomorrow there will be a better world. Being friendly and sharing love might just be4 the medicine we need.
I think this is reflected in the video by using two differents groups (the people and the zombies) that are actively trying to kill eachother, but eventually come together. It is a bit of a stretch, but somehow a good metaphor.
In the first part we see Drew and other people having a good ol time, life is good. Later on we see them encounter a group of zombies, creatures who look similar, but are still very different. After they fight, we see Drew as a pastor, talking to a group of zombies and humans, calling for love, friendship and community. (You might just say that Drew thinks love is the most important religion).
We end with a party scene, because according to Drew "Throwing a party is sometimes the only way to fight off the darkness."

This is my take on it. I don't know if it's 100% true, but I hope I helped you with this!
Friendly greetings from the Netherlands :)

This song is my kind of vibe. Being able to somehow still make the most of the cards your dealt and enjoy the rollercoaster that is life despite the chaos surrounding you at times is so important. Ride whatever high you can, celebrate everything good and live in the here and now šŸ‘Œ
