Signing to Island Records through Haqq Islam's University Records imprint, the group released two successful albums, Dru Hill and Enter the Dru, before separating for a period from late 1999 to 2002, during which time Sisqó and Woody released solo albums. While Woody's Soul Music LP was a moderate success in the gospel music industry, Sisqó's debut album, Unleash the Dragon, and its hit singles, "Thong Song" and "Incomplete", were major pop successes, and established Sisqó as a household name outside Dru Hill. Sisqó's second album, Return of Dragon, did not sell as well.
In 2002, by then part of the Def Soul record label, the group reunited and added fifth member Rufus "Scola" Waller to the lineup for their third album, Dru World Order, whose underperformance led to the group being dropped from Def Soul. In 2009, the group signed to Kedar Entertainment Group and released their fourth album, InDRUpendence Day, the following year, with new member Tao taking the place of the again departed Woody.

The lyrics to Dru Hill's "Below Zero" is a poignant and emotional song about a relationship that has turned cold. The song starts off with Nokio expressing his desire to not assassinate the character of his lover despite everything that has happened between them. He still cares for her, but he cannot continue to stay at the table just staring at her. Jazz then comes in, asking for his lover's forgiveness for treating her so badly and making her sad. He wants to start afresh and build a stronger foundation for their relationship. However, he acknowledges that his lover's heart is frozen, and he wants to be the one to break through the ice and change her life for the better.
The chorus is a repeated call for his lover's attention. Jazz recognizes that his lover is proud, sitting on a bag of ice, while he tries to treat her right. He wishes that he could warm her up, but something always holds him back. The bridge is a cry for help from both Nokio and Jazz. They cannot keep up with the love that they are not receiving, and it is causing their communications to freeze up.
