Tears Dry On Their Own
Dua Lipa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One, two, three

All I can ever be to you
Is the darkness that we knew
And this regret I've got accustomed to
Once it was so right we were at our high
Waiting for you in the hotel at night
And knew I hadn't met my match
But every moment we could snatch
I don't know why I got so attached
It's my responsibility
And you don't owe nothing to
Me but to walk away i have no capacity

He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I'm grown
And in your way in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own

I don't understand
Why do I stress the man when there's
So many bigger things at hand?
We coulda never had it all
We had to hit a wall
So this is inevitable withdrawal
Even if I stop wanting you
A perspective pushes through
I'll be some next man's other woman soon
I cannot play myself again
I should just be my own best friend
Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men

She walks away, the sun goes down
She takes the day, but I'm grown
And in your way in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own

So we are history your shadow covers me
The sky above, a blaze

I could say no regrets
And no emotional debts
'Cause as we kiss goodbye the sun sets
So we are history the shadow covers me
The sky above, a blaze only lovers see

He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I'm grown
And in your way in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own

He walks away, the sun goes down
She takes the day, but I'm grown
And in your way, and my deep shade

My tears dry on their own, babe
My tears dry on their own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dua Lipa and Gallant's song "Tears Dry On Their Own" convey a sense of regret, responsibility, and acceptance. The first verse explains that the singer can only be the darkness of the past relationship to the person they are speaking to. They have become accustomed to this regret and can never be anything more to this person. The second verse reflects on the time when the relationship was right and waiting for them in the hotel at night. The singer was happy then and didn't feel like they had met their match until they got attached. The chorus addresses how the person they were with took the day while they were grown and in this blue shade, their tears dry on their own.

The third verse questions her stressing over a man when there are bigger things to worry about. The relationship hit a wall and it was inevitable for them to withdraw from each other. The perspective pushes through, even if she stops wanting him, she will always be some other man's wife. She realizes she shouldn't play herself again and should just be her own best friend instead of getting caught up with stupid men. Finally, the chorus repeats, and the final verse reflects on the fact that they are now history, and the sky above is a blaze of color that only lovers see.

Lovin, lovin, lovin! I wish Dua went towards R&B, soul, jazz, instead of pop. Her voice is so deep and magical... Amazing cover!

+Quang Vũ You mean Brianna!!!

@aliv6321

Her vocals are mind blowing, I do like a few of her songs, but I definitely wish her productions were less pop centered and really allowed her vocals to come through! She can really stand on her own as a vocalist.
