High Noon
Duane Eddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
On this, our weddin' day
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Wait, wait along

I do not know what fate awaits me
I only know I must be brave
And I must face a man who hates me
Or lie a coward, a craven coward
Or lie a coward in my grave

Oh, to be torn 'twixt love and duty
S'posin' I lose my fair-haired beauty
Look at that big hand move along
Nearin' high noon

He made a vow while in state prison
Vowed it would be my life or his'n
I'm not afraid of death but oh
What will I do if you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
You made that promise as a bride
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Although you're grievin', don't think of leavin'
Now that I need you by my side

Wait along, (wait along) wait along

Wait along, wait along
(Wait along, wait along, wait along, wait along)

Overall Meaning

Duane Eddy's song "High Noon" is a ballad that tells a story of a man in a tense and life-changing situation where he must face his enemy and possibly die. The song begins with the man, who is a groom, pleading with his bride not to forsake him on their wedding day. He does not know what will happen, but he knows he must be brave in the fearful and uncertain times ahead. He is afraid that he might end up being a coward and lying in his grave. The second stanza reveals that the man has an enemy who has made a vow to kill him after being released from prison. The man is not afraid of death but fears that he might not be able to cope with his lover's departure if he dies.

In the third stanza, the man is torn between his feelings of love and his duty to protect his life. He wonders what will happen if he loses his fair-haired beauty. The man looks at the big hand on the clock moving closer to noon, the time he is due to face his enemy. Finally, the man pleads with his bride not to leave him as she promised on their wedding day, and to stay with him during his most challenging point in life.

Mike Vallen you forgot one thing. Eddy as far as I know has never sung. so this shows that you don't need vocals. however there are some backround voices

I love the song and it brings back many memories.  This is the first movie I saw Jack Elam in.  I remember the beauty of Grace Kelly.  I loved the plot of the movie about a man that was willing to die for his beliefs and would not back down against insurmountable odds.  We need more people in this country that feels this way and are willing to stand up and be county.  I think this story was about the right kind of pride and willingness to take a stand for justice-justice and the rights of all.

I saw High Noon when I was 7 and never forgot it.  I used to sing High Noon at the top of my voice, made my mom and gramma laugh.  That's back when they really made movies.  Duane Eddy is superb>

I saw the movie when it first came out and bought the Text Ritter theme song on a 78 rpm shellac disc. I recently started learning the guitar at age 70 and started playing this song, kinda, and wondered why Duane Eddy hadn't recorded it. And blow me over, here it is! Thanks for posting.
