In addition to playing in several other projects, including Predator Vision and the Parasails, Mondanile released a split with Dracula Lewis in 2010, before releasing Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics in 2011. The album took a more bare-bones approach, and marked a notable change in style for Ducktails. By the time 2013's The Flower Lane arrived on Domino Recordings, Mondanile had moved even further away from his bedroom beginnings, recording more traditional mellow pop with a full band. A five-song EP, Wish Hotel, arrived later that year, retaining the same sophisticated style as the album that preceded it, as did 2015's full-length St. Catherine. With producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck) bringing a touch of warmth and clarity to Mondanile's sincere psychedelic tunes, the album also featured guest appearances by fellow experimental indie artists James Ferraro and Julia Holter.
The lead guitarist parted ways with Real Estate in 2016 before Ducktails' Jersey Devil arrived a year later on Mondanile's own New Images label. Started in Los Angeles but finished after moving back to his hometown of Ridgewood, its collaborators included co-producer John Anderson (Girls, Nick Waterhouse) and Parasol's Chi Yoon Hae, who flew in from South Korea to cover bass.

Ducktails Lyrics

There is no more life in me
Guess I’ll turn my head and hide away
Hide away
I just don’t know what to say
I don’t always act so shy, you
Shy, you see
For a minute or two, today, today
In the hallway, I felt anticipation
I just want it to look away
When I see you, my heart turns blue
I act so shy, always around you
This happens every couple days
I see you and try to walk away, walk away
You seem to be around
In every different part of town, part of town
In that after-noon, a certain light shine my way
Shine my way
You don’t have to worry
Or ever feel afraid
In fact you never have to act this way
When I see you, my heart turns blue
I act so shy, always around you
The lyrics of Ducktails's song "Timothy Shy" convey the feelings of hesitance and nervousness when encountering a crush. The singer of the song seems to have a strong attraction to the person they are singing about, but they feel paralyzed and unable to express their emotions. The line "When I see you, my heart turns blue" suggests that the singer's intense feelings make them feel emotionally drained, and that they are struggling to control their emotions. They seem to constantly try to avoid their crush, expressing a desire to "turn [their] head and hide away" whenever they are around them.
The song also portrays a sense of self-doubt and insecurity, as the singer feels they "just don't know what to say" and always "act so shy" around their crush. However, they also seem to be aware of their own behavior and express their frustration with themselves for not being able to act differently. Despite this, they still feel drawn to their crush and feel a sense of anticipation when they are close by.
