Smoke Without Fire
Duffy(더피) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I'd known you were cheating me,
I would have saved myself and set you free.
If I learned you weren't the loving kind,
I would have saved some peace of mind.

My friends told me you would break my heart,
And never last, we would surely part.
There's no smoke without fire,
Baby, baby you're a liar.

People talk in this little town,
Rumours keep spreading all around.
And now word has it you've been foolin' me,
I'm so blind that I cannot see.

My friends told me never to believe in you,
You never loved me you were never true.

There's no smoke without fire,
Baby, baby you're a liar.

No there's no smoke without fire.
Baby, baby you're a liar.
You're a liar
You're a liar
You're a liar
Baby you're a liar.

There's no light without a flame,
There's no use in having you to blame.

No
There's no smoke without fire.

Baby, baby you're a liar.
You're a liar

Overall Meaning

In Duffy's song "Smoke Without Fire" the singer expresses their regret of being deceived and cheated on by their partner. The first verse establishes that the singer was unaware of their partner's infidelity, however, if they had known the truth, they would have saved themselves and let their partner go. The second verse mentions the presence of rumors in their small town and how the singer was blinded by their lack of awareness. The chorus repeatedly states "there's no smoke without fire" implying that the rumors about their partner cheating were true, and that they were a liar for denying it.

The bridge of the song states that there's no point in blaming the partner for what had happened and that there's no light without a flame, indicating that there can't be a relationship without honesty and truthfulness. The song ends by repeating the chorus and calling out the partner for their deceptive behaviour.

Overall, "Smoke Without Fire" expresses the pain of betrayal and the realization that the rumors about their partner were in fact true. The song highlights the importance of being truthful in a relationship and the consequences that come with deceiving someone who loves and trusts you.

This is the perfect song for the ending of this movie--one of those rare end credits songs that the movie is not complete without, like "My Heart Will Go On" for Titanic. An Education is my favorite film. Jenny grows up, learns, becomes independent. Dear God, what an important theme An Education has--never depend completely on a man, and never ever ever sacrifice your personal development for a relationship. Never throw your independence away, especially when you're not even twenty yet. Because at any moment, that relationship could crash and burn. The only person you should ever completely rely upon, the only person you can trust without reservation, is yourself. And that's why your most important commitment is to yourself as a human being. And if anyone ever tries to make you lesser, pettier, lazier, more ignorant, or having less integrity as a human being, then you kick that loser to the curb.

+Marie Wasson Never depend on a bandit either man or woman. No gender question. If you want to gender it, ok. It's your political view, biased. So please teach your kids to completely trust any woman they see. And wait.

@danieljaffen

Duffy is phenomenal, I wish she made new music.

@Leyli Mammadova She isn't the same person, so even if she did, it would be so different.

@user-ft8kk8zt2p

Some bad things happened to her so she probably won't comeback. AT this point you can only hope she finds peace and happiness.
