My Boy
Duffy Lyrics

Why you starin' at each other?
What's your problem?
I'm not his keeper,
I'm his teacher
Ho, 'n it goes deeper
What's your problem?
I can't control, these feelings I have inside
I had to let go, let go of my pride
Age is a number
Don't steal my thunder
Can't love no other, other, other
You're my boy,
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
My boy, my boy!
Where's the blame, where's the shame?
We're just two hearts come together
What's your problem?
He's not a boy, not a toy
He's man enough to understand
What's your problem?
I can't control these feelings I have inside
I had to let go, let go of my prize
Age is a number
Don't steal my thunder
I can't love no other, other, other
You're my boy,
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
My boy, my boy!
Don't mind tellin' you baby, she says he's my boy
Don't mind tellin' you baby, she says he's my boy
Don't mind tellin' you baby, she says he's my boy
Don't mind tellin' you baby, she says he's my boy
My boy, my boy
Yes, you're my boy,
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
Keepin' you inside so they don't see that you're my boy
My boy, my boy!
The lyrics of Duffy's song My Boy speak of a relationship between an older woman and a younger man. The song is a defense of her relationship as she responds to people who are staring and judging her for being in a relationship with someone younger. The first verse, "I'm his lover, not his mother. Why you starin' at each other? What's your problem?" is a direct challenge to anyone who would harshly judge their love. The singer then goes on to explain that she is not responsible for him but is a teacher to him. She can't control the feelings she has for him and had to let go of her pride to be with him.
The chorus repeats "You're my boy, keeping you inside so they don't see that you're my boy" as a way of expressing her possessiveness and protectiveness of him. She does not want others to judge or interfere with their relationship. The second verse of the song continues the challenge to those who would judge their love, essentially saying that love knows no bounds and it is nobody's business but their own. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing how much the singer cares for and wants to protect her boy, her lover.
Overall, the lyrics of My Boy are a powerful defense of a love that is often controversial and misunderstood. The singer is challenging society's norms and conventions and standing up for her right to be with the person she loves. It speaks to the universal theme of love knows no bounds, and we should all be free to love and be loved, regardless of age, race, gender, or any other factors.
