Save It for Your Prayers
Duffy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You've been telling me lies
Heard in a sparrow's song
Every thing it said was wrong
Found it on your shirts
All the lipstick and the dirt
Your late nights on the town
Like red wine makes me down
I don't need no explanation
I don't need the truth
Show some remorse for me
And for what you do
Save it for your prayer, boy
There's no need to hurry
Save it for your prayer, boy
I've learned not to worry, yeah
Save it for your prayer
I, I'm not gonna care no
I'm not gonna be there for you
Read it in a letter
That you've hurt me so
Never thought
I'd leave you but
Now I guess
I don't know, oh
I thought
You'd love me and I
I thought we'd last
But now I realize
It was all in the past
Save it for your prayer, boy
There's no need to hurry
Save it for your prayer, boy
'cause I, I've learned
Not to worry, no
Save it for your prayer
I'm not gonna care no
I'm not gonna be there
Yeah
For you
For you
Save it for your prayer
The lyrics of the song Save It For Your Prayers by Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy reveal a story of a lover who betrayed her trust and broke her heart. The song starts with the singer hearing rumors about her partner's infidelity, with the evidence being found on his shirts stained with lipstick and dirt. She realizes that his late-night escapades in town make her feel as low as red wine. The chorus of the song emphasizes how she doesn't need any explanation or truth and that it's too late for remorse, as whatever he has to say can be saved for his prayers. The singer realizes that she doesn't care anymore and won't be there for him, no matter what he says.
The second verse of the song continues with the singer explaining how she found out the truth through a letter, and although she thought they would last and he would love her, she realizes that it was all in the past. The chorus repeats the theme of not worrying about what he has to say or do, as the damage has already been done. The song ends with a repetition of the last line, emphasizing the singer's resolution to move on from the relationship.
Overall, the song's themes of betrayal, heartbreak, and moving on are relatable to many people who have gone through similar experiences in their lives. The chorus of the song's advice to save it for your prayers is an alternative to forgiveness, emphasizing that some actions cannot be undone, and one must deal with the consequences of their choices.
