Syrup
Duffy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't you be wastin' all your money
On syrup and honey because I'm sweet enough
Don't you be usin' every minute on makin' a livin'
Because we got our love

Listen to me 1, 2, 3,
Baby, baby, baby,
Spend your time on me

Don't you be out all night long
Leavin' me all alone
Because I, I need your love
Don't you be spendin' every day workin' away
Because I'm waitin' for you

Listen to me 1, 2, 3,
Baby, baby, baby,
Spend your time on me

Spend it, spend it, spend it
Your time on me
Please baby

Hmm
Please baby

Overall Meaning

In Duffy's song "Syrup & Honey," the singer urges her lover not to waste time or money on external pleasures, because her love is enough to fill their lives with happiness. She urges him not to be out all night, leaving her alone, because she needs his love. Rather, she wants him to spend his time with her, cherishing each moment, rather than working all day to make a living. The song is an appeal for prioritizing love above all else.

The lyrics suggest a deep connection between the singer and her lover, and a desire to prioritize their relationship above all else. The use of "syrup and honey" as a metaphor for external pleasures emphasizes the idea that love, in its purest form, is the only thing that truly satisfies. The repetition of "baby, baby, baby" and "listen to me 1, 2, 3" emphasizes the urgency of the singer's message, urging her lover to focus on what truly matters.

Overall, "Syrup & Honey" is a passionate plea for love and intimacy, a reminder that material possessions and career success mean little without the warmth of human connection.

This woman is a real singer! Not even a bit of autotune in her voice. The fact she did this song in one take is just impressive. I hope she comes back soon with an album. ❤️

Linda Fletcher

She has a song I love called Warwick Avenue

Chalice Guard

Missing Duffy's sweet soulful presence in music. Very beautiful song.

embargoman is a hypocritical, ugly inbred fuck!!!!

How terribly underrated and underappreciated she is should be a crime.

Donald Cole

Hear hear

embargoman is a hypocritical, ugly inbred fuck!!!!

Donald Cole It's a shame,. people like Adele are very overrated and for what? Having a mediocre voice, annoying and depressing music and a bad role model.

embargoman is a hypocritical, ugly inbred fuck!!!!

Donald Cole I meant to say people like Adele are famous, but they're overrated.

Michael O'Connor

She has tens of millions of views on her songs. That's hardly "underrated" in my opinion.

***** I meant, not as a way as far as youtube. In real life, most people haven't even heard of Duffy and she's not some mainstream pop singer like Adele who gets a whole lot of attention. She's cute, adorable and truly, one of the few singers who can sing as well live as in the studio, which is very rare these days.

I admire this recording, not only for Duffy's singing but also for the production decision to have only a single guitar accompaniment to let her voice shine.
