In 2012, two EPs on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings (with whom Duke has had a long standing relationship) changed all that. ‘For Club Play Vol. 1 & 2’ offered up sweet ecstatic deep house & UK bass cuts that have united people across the spectrum of music, from early club adopters like Annie Mac, Erol Alkan, Diplo, Martyn and Jackmaster to Fearne Cotton on daytime Radio 1, Trevor Nelson on 1xtra and even podcasts by Tiesto and Avicii. On some nights in Duke’s beloved Fabric London, you would hear the anthemic ‘The Giver’ being played in all three rooms at the same time.
Duke’s early career was mentored by Switch (last sighted producing for Beyoncé) and he made his name as the ‘go-to’ man to remake a pop song for the dance floor (Lily Allen and Bat For Lashes were notable clients). In 2011, he moved out of London to the countryside (Hertfordshire, where his studio overlooks a forest) to focus on his original material.
Synthesizing his influences from techno to UK garage and house he brought back goodies from this zen-like exile. ‘For Club Play Only Vol. 1’ was released in April 2012 on Turbo. With ‘Street Walker’ and ‘Thunderclap’ on there, it alerted the heads to the Duke movement and received support from the likes of Jamie Jones and Simian Mobile Disco.
Remixes for AlunaGeorge and Santigold quickly followed, then in August ‘For Club Play Only Vol.2’ featuring ‘No Money Blues’ and ‘The Giver’ made Duke the man to watch. ‘The producer’s producer’ had become the ‘people’s producer’.
‘Need U (100%)’ features 17 year-old starlet A*M*Eon singing duties. With a chunky low-end, funky stabs and silky vocals this is like an early 90s house classic couched in 2013 techno techniques. In 1988 Inner City would have been jealous of this one.
Co-written by teenage wonder-kid MNEK (who recently sung on Rudimental’s ‘Spoons’ with [artistSyron[/artist]) the Duke released ‘Need U (100%)’ in March 2013 on his newly minted Blasé Boys Club label, where it topped the UK charts for two weeks.

We're riding through the dark night, night
With half a tank and empty heart
Pretending we're in love, but it's never enough, nah
As the sirens fill the lonely air
Oh, how did we get here, now, now, now, babe?
We see a storm is closing in (oh, oh, oh, oh)
Pretending we ain't scared
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never (oh yeah)
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
We're running all the red lights down
No way that we can stop, nah, nah
A quarter tank and almost gone
Pretending we're in love, but it's never enough, nah
I wish we could take it back in time
Before we crossed the line, now, now, now, babe
We see a storm is closing in (oh, oh, oh, oh)
I reach out for your hand
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh, ooh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh, ooh, yeah)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (ooh, yeah, uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (ooh, uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never (oh yeah)
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, hold on)
Ooh
Hold on, ooh, yeah, oh
Hold on
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (hold on, uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, ooh, yeah)
The lyrics of Duke Dumont's song "Ocean Drive" are evocative of a reckless night out in the city, as two individuals who are pretending to be in love ride down the boulevard on a half-tank of gas and an empty heart. As they speed past red lights and sirens, they become painfully aware of a storm closing in, but choose to continue to dance with the devil, driven by a desire to feel alive and passion in a cold world. The lyrics are tinged with a sense of regret and longing for a return to a time before things went wrong, represented by the line "I wish we could take it back in time, before we crossed the line, now, now, now, baby." Overall, the song presents a vivid picture of the tension between reckless abandon and the desire for something more authentic and meaningful.
One interesting fact about "Ocean Drive" is that it was released in 2015 as the lead single from Duke Dumont's EP "Blasé Boys Club Part 1." The song was immediately popular, reaching number one on the US Dance Club Songs chart and number ten on the UK Singles Chart. Another interesting feature of the song is its lush and retro-inspired production, which incorporates elements of house, disco, and funk music, along with a catchy bassline and soaring vocals. This production style has become characteristic of Duke Dumont's music, with other popular songs like "Need U (100%)" and "I Got U" using similar rhythms and sounds.
Another key element of the song is its music video, which features a group of young people exploring the city and living life to the fullest, despite the constant threat of being caught by the police. The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine and has amassed over 250 million views on YouTube. In addition to its commercial success, "Ocean Drive" has been praised by music critics for its catchy chorus and lyrical depth, with some calling it a "nostalgic anthem for lost love."
