Autumn Leaves
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Duke Ellington's Autumn Leaves describe the changing of the seasons and the memories of a lost love. The first stanza is a vivid portrayal of the autumn season, as the singer sees the red and gold leaves falling outside his window. He reminisces about the past, recalling the warmth of summer kisses and the feeling of holding his lover's sun-burned hands. In the second stanza, he acknowledges the passing of time and the approach of winter. However, it is the autumn season that brings him the most pain, as it reminds him of the love he has lost.

The final stanza is sung in French and adds another layer of emotion and longing to the song. The singer speaks of a love that once existed between him and his partner, but has since faded away. He uses the image of the ocean washing away the footprints of lovers as a metaphor for the fading of their love. The gentle and melancholic melody of the song further reinforces the sense of loss and nostalgia.

This song has such bitter sweet memories for me of my father who pasted away many years ago in Oct of 1986. He loved Duke Ellington's music. I used to listen to this over and over when he died. It reminded so much of he and my mother and the love they had for each other for over 30 years before he died...............

Comfort yourself in the knowledge that you do have sweet memories when some people have bitter memories of parents. You are fortunate in having good memories of your parents (as I have of mine). God bless you.

You're right, Rachel: this song cuts across time probably for everyone.

I played this on my local FM station KVMR, Nevada City, CA. Reminded listener it is evocative of Sunday afternoon in a Wshington DC leafy suburb in '57 !!

Ozzy voce assolutamente divina... Splendido il preludio al violino... Che meraviglia

Ozzie Bailey did a lot of great songs for Billy Strayhorn. Songs like "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing," "Love Has Passed Me By," "Something to Live For." Had a CD with these songs, but lost it somehow. Would post them otherwise. Surely they're on Youtube here somewhere.
