Black Brown & Beige
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lord, dear Lord I've loved, God almighty
God of love, please look down and see my people through

Lord, dear Lord I've loved, God almighty
God of love, please look down and see my people through

I believe that sun and moon up in the sky
When the day is gray
I know it, clouds passing by

He'll give peace and comfort
To every troubled mind
Come Sunday, oh come Sunday
That's the day

Often we feel weary
But he knows our every care
Go to him in secret
He will hear your every prayer

Lillies on the valley
They neither toll nor spin
And flowers bloom in spring time
Birds sing

Often we feel weary
But he knows our every care
Go to him in secret
He will hear your every prayer

Up from dawn till sunset
Man work hard all the day

Come Sunday, oh come Sunday
That's the day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Duke Ellington and His Orchestra's song Come Sunday express a plea for divine intervention and comfort in times of struggle. The repetition of the phrase "Lord, dear Lord I've loved, God almighty," emphasizes the love and devotion that the singer has for God, and highlights the religious nature of the plea. The repetition of the phrase "God of love, please look down and see my people through," further emphasizes the need for God's assistance in difficult times. The lyrics also suggest that God is aware of the struggles of his people, and has the power to bring peace and comfort to troubled minds.

The imagery used in the song is also noteworthy. The mention of the sun and moon in the sky and the passing clouds suggest the cyclical nature of the world and the comfort that can be found in the constancy of natural phenomena. The reference to lilies in the valley not toiling or spinning, and the mention of flowers blooming and birds singing, suggest that beauty and joy can be found even in the midst of difficulty. The talk of working hard all day, contrasted with the relief and peace that come with the observance of Sunday as a day of rest and worship, further emphasize the idea that God can provide respite and comfort for the weary.

Overall, Come Sunday is a plea for divine intervention and comfort in times of difficulty, emphasizing the love and devotion that the singer feels for God, and the belief that God can provide peace and relief.

In this recording we hear all of the original Black movement - except that Harry Carney had to replace the momentarily absent Johnny Hodges in the original Come Sunday sequence. On the old side 2 Mahalia Jackson sings lyrics for Come Sunday, newly written by Billy Strayhorn, who also made a new arrangement of this. There is nothing from the Brown and Beige sections.

Ah , it's appeared Duke Ellington's sacred praise worshipping concerts beyond categories spiritually electro chemo magnetically subtle energies governing soulselves consciousness of Eternal Now, becamed very evidently after his mother had transitioned to the super natural;
Where his soulselves felted empty of spiritual healing n restoration was needed . Ms. Mahalia Jackson became his musical mistress, which fed his soul ;that he once had called " her the world greatest cook " !
Ms. Jackson had sold 1,000,000 records of Move on up a Little Higher " , now , governing consciousness spirit had" Sir Duke "to court her to sing with his aggregation of jazz band, in which , she eventually agreed, but , not at first . That how " doors were opened that were closed in her face 👀" !!! Sir Duke got her a Columbia record's contract to sing on his label at that time ;
