Memories of You
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waking skies at sunrise
Every sunset too
Seems to be bringing me
Memories of you

Here and there, everywhere
Scenes that we once knew
And they all just recall
Memories of you

(Oh) how I wish I could forget those
(Those) happy yesteryears
That have left a rosary of tears

Your face beams in my dreams
(In) spite of all (that) I do

(And) everything seems to bring
Memories of you

Overall Meaning

In Duke Ellington's song, "Memories of You," the singer is lamenting the memories he has of a past lover. The opening lines set the scene of a new day, but even as the sun rises and the day fades, the singer is unable to shake off the memories of his former lover. Everywhere he looks, he sees scenes that remind him of her, and they all "just recall memories of you."

As the song progresses, he longs to forget the happy times they shared, as they now only serve as a painful reminder of what was lost. The memory of her face continues to haunt him, appearing in his dreams against his will. The song is a poignant reflection on the power of memories and how they can shape our present and future.
