The Gal from Joes
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Way down at Mister Joe's cafe
They're takin' someone far away
And if you hear a song today
It's a sad tune that you'll be playin'

She's leavin' and folks are feelin' so low
They're grievin' and they're consolin' poor Joe
Gonna miss her song, gonna miss her smile
She'll be travelin' alone down that last long mile
They're sighin' with all their trouble and woes
They're cryin' 'cause they all loved the gal from Joe's

She's leavin' and folks are feelin' so low
They're grievin' and they're consolin' poor Joe
Gonna miss her song, gonna miss her smile
She'll be travelin' alone down that last long mile

They're sighin' with all their trouble and woes
They're cryin' 'cause they all loved the gal from Joe's

Overall Meaning

The song "The Gal from Joe's" by Duke Ellington is a melancholic tune that tells the story of a woman leaving town, much to the sadness of the people in the neighborhood, especially those in Mister Joe's Cafe. The first verse sets the tone, describing the scene at the cafe where people are saying goodbye to someone who is about to embark on a journey. Ellington speaks to the universal experience of wishing someone well while simultaneously feeling the weight of their absence.

The second verse goes deeper into the personal level of sadness for Joe, who is going to miss her song and smile. The song is a reminder that the people we take for granted in our lives can suddenly be gone, and we will miss them when they're gone. The final chorus is a poignant reminder of the community's shared sense of loss as they all loved the gal from Joe's.

Overall, "The Gal from Joe's" is a bittersweet lament for the end of an era and the sadness that comes with parting ways. It speaks to the human experience of loss and the sentimentality that comes with saying goodbye.

Is it sacrilege to prefer the Charlie Barnet version?!?!

@jourwalis-8875

Very strange and unusual with a fade-out on a 1938 recording! Was this really so on the original recording? Otherwise very good! Fantastic music!
