What Am I Here For
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What am I here for
Living in misery
Now that you've gone from my heart
That was my fear for
You were my future
There was no reason to part

Still I hope you change your mind
cnd that somehow you will find
You were meant to be my own
I'll be lost if I'm all alone

I know you remember
cll that you told me
Times when you'd hold me so tight
How could you grieve me
How could you leave me
Knowing your love is my light

In your heart there should be
Thoughts of your return to me
I would be happy

Patiently waiting
Knowing then just why I am here

The greatest jazz orchestra

@fromthesidelines

This was recorded on February 26, 1942, and probably one of The Duke's greatest "mood pieces". Whether he found the answer he was looking for by writing this, we'll never know. But the fact remains that Ellington WAS here, and left a musical legacy very few people have ever equalled.

A classic!! Glorious section work. Tricky Sam Nanton provides some thoughtful wa was. No wonder this became so popular and became the theme song for at least two disc jockey shows back in the good old days.

RIP Hazen Schumacher 1927 - 2015
His radio program "Jazz Revisited," which used this song as its opening them music, was on the air from 1967 to 1997, and syndicated nationally through National Public Radio from 1971 on. Schumacher provided many listeners with their first taste of jazz from the era or 1917 - 1947.

"'JAZZ REVISITED'. A review of the first three decades of recorded American jazz.....1917 to 1947. The artists, and their music. A program produced at the University of Michigan. And now, here is your host- Hazen Schumacher."

I used to listen to his show all the time back in the early to mid 80s. RIP to him AND The Duke!

I loved that show. It drove me crazy to try to find out the name of this piece, I couldn't find anyone else who heard the program or could identify it when I'd hum it. Beautiful music. I'm grateful to find other people who heard Mr. Schumacher.
