The first roots of the band may be found in Mad Madam, which was a cover band with a set list full of songs from Seattle groups. Kaan Tangöze and Ari Barokas were together in Mad Madam until Tangöze flew to Seattle to earn a graduate degree. Upon returning to Turkiye with a handful of songs molded in the spirit of the Seattle scene, Tangöze formed Duman with Ari Barokas from his former group and Batuhan Mutlugil from another local cover band. After first deciding to work with session drummers, drummer Alen Konakoğlu took on this responsibility and the group released Eski Köprünün Altında in 1999.

Ardına düşmesiniz gerek
Kendisi bir garip melek
Ardına düşmesiniz gerek
Öyle bir an gelir melek
Farkına varmanız gerek
Öyle bir an gider melek
Aldırdmanzsa aldırma
Ama kendini kandırman gerek
Kandırmazsan kandırma
O zaman sana anlatmam gerek
Kendisi bir garip melek
Ardına düşmesiniz gerek
Kendisi bir garip melek
Ardına düşmesiniz gerek
Aldırdmanzsa aldırma
Ama kendini kandırman gerek
Kandırmazsan kandırma
O zaman sana anlatmam gerek
Senden daha melek
Senden daha melek
Senden daha melek
Senden daha melek
Senden daha melek
Aldırdmanzsa aldırma
Ama kendini kandırman gerek
Senden daha melek
Kandırmazsan kandırma
O zaman sana anlatmam gerek
The song "Melek" by Duman speaks about a strange angel; the lyrics can be interpreted as a warning to be cautious not to follow the angel blindly. The song starts by saying that the angel is a strange one, and people should not follow it. The repeated line "Ardına düşmesiniz gerek" emphasizes the need to be careful and not blindly follow this peculiar angel. The following verses talk about how this angel may come and go, and people should pay attention to it.
The chorus repeats the same warning; if someone falls under the angel's influence, they should be careful not to deceive themselves. It is only when someone acknowledges the truth and is truthful with themselves that they can resist the lure of the "garip melek." The final verse talks about how this angel is unlike any other and potentially more special, but ultimately, people still need to be wary of it.
Overall, "Melek" can be interpreted as a cautionary tale about not following blindly, even when something or someone may seem magical or special. It's a reminder to be truthful and honest with oneself, which ultimately helps individuals make better decisions and stay on a path of their choosing.
