The first roots of the band may be found in Mad Madam, which was a cover band with a set list full of songs from Seattle groups. Kaan Tangöze and Ari Barokas were together in Mad Madam until Tangöze flew to Seattle to earn a graduate degree. Upon returning to Turkiye with a handful of songs molded in the spirit of the Seattle scene, Tangöze formed Duman with Ari Barokas from his former group and Batuhan Mutlugil from another local cover band. After first deciding to work with session drummers, drummer Alen Konakoğlu took on this responsibility and the group released Eski Köprünün Altında in 1999.

Kim ne derse desinler
Arkanızdan yol almam
Onlar ister alınsın
İsterlerse darılsın
Onu bunu bilmem karışmam
Kim ne derse desinler
Onlar ister alınsın
İsterlerse satılsın
Ooh
Seni kendime sakladım
Eeh
Hepsini ben hesapladım
Eeh
Seni kendime sakladım
Eeh
Hepsini ben hesapladım
Onu bunu bilmem anlamam
Kim ne derse desinler
İşte meydan işte can
Onlar ister kapışsın
İsterlerse barışsın
Ooh
Seni kendime sakladım
Eeh
Hepsini ben hesapladım
Eeh
Seni kendime sakladım
Eeh
Eeh
Seni kendime sakladım
Eeh
Hepsini ben hesapladım
Eeh
Seni kendime sakladım
Ooh
Hepsini ben hesapladım
In Duman's song "Seni Kendime Sakladım", the lyrics revolve around the theme of not caring about what others think or say and prioritizing one's own feelings and beliefs. The singer asserts that they do not involve themselves in gossip or drama, and they are not interested in pleasing everyone or being "bought and sold". They have kept someone special to themselves and have figured out everything on their own. The chorus repeats the line "Seni kendime sakladım" which translates to "I've kept you for myself" as a declaration of their deep attachment to this person.
The lyrics suggest a sense of confidence and independence, as the singer is not swayed by external opinions or pressures. Instead, they have made their own decisions and are proud of them. The repeated use of "isterlerse" which means "if they want to" is a powerful statement of agency, as it emphasizes that the singer is not bound by anyone else's expectations or needs. The use of the word "meydan" which means "field" or "arena" also adds to the theme of standing up for oneself and facing challenges head-on.
