Une peur incertaine
Si intense
Une tristesse mondaine
Lentement
La nuit
Pendant
Que le rêves
Nourrissent nos yeux
Si intense
Un silence étouffé
Si intense
Se mouvoir sans bouger
Lentement
La nuit
S’impose d’elle-même
Pendant
Que les rêves
Nourrissent nos yeux
Lentement
La nuit
S’impose d’elle-même
Pendant
Que les rêves
Nourrissent nos yeux
Dumas's song Lentement la nuit is a haunting portrayal of intense and uncertain emotions that surmount us during the night. The opening lines, "Si intense | Une peur incertaine | Si intense | Une tristesse mondaine" (So intense | An uncertain fear | So intense | A worldly sadness), paint a picture of a profound and ambiguous anxiety and grief that overwhelms us in the dead of night. This is followed by, "Lentement | La nuit | S'impose d'elle-même" (Slowly | The night | imposes itself), creating a sense of inevitability and inescapability that comes with the darkness of night.
The next lines, "Pendant | Que les rêves | Nourrissent nos yeux" (While | Dreams | Feed our eyes), suggest a respite from the intense emotions that we experience while awake. However, even in dreams, the intensity of our emotions isn't entirely eradicated, implying that these emotions are a fundamental part of our beings. The final verse conveys the same message as the first, "Si intense | Un silence étouffé | Si intense | Se mouvoir sans bouger" (So intense | A stifled silence | So intense | Moving without moving), amplifying the idea that these emotions are all-pervading and overwhelming, making it impossible to ignore or escape them.
Through these incisive lyrics, Dumas has captured the essence of the internal conflict we all face, especially in the dark and lonely hours of the night. It is a poignant reminder that our emotions are an intrinsic part of who we are and that accepting them, no matter how intense or conflicted, is the only way to move forward.
