Lucifer's Child
Dunbarrow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the darkening waylaid night
With my cradle she took her flight
Into the wilderness picking her fight
Can you understand my young mother's plight

Amid the treetops where no one could see
She sang a song and a prayer for me
Laid down my cradle to flow down the stream
Into cold nature and into her dreams

Away from the comforts that burn at the stake
She gave birth to a venom snake
Oh don't you cry no more
On her great pyre she smiled
For she carried lucifer's child

I spit like a snake and I howl at the moon
Before twenty-one winters, and twenty-two soon
My mother's revenge has sharpened my claws
For I only abide by nature's laws
And I will descend on the preacher men's nest
To take my revenge in a feast of their flesh

Away from the comforts that burn at the stake
She gave birth to a venom snake
Oh don't you cry no more
On her great pyre she smiled
For she carried lucifer's child

And if they think in death they'd find rest
My mother awaits them a torturer's guest
So don't you go down, no
Your bended knees wouldn't help

Away from the comforts that burn at the stake
She gave birth to a venom snake
Oh don't you cry no more

On her great pyre she smiled
For she carried lucifer's child

Overall Meaning

The Dunbarrow song "Lucifer's Child" tells the story of a young mother who takes her child and runs away into the wilderness, away from the judgment and persecution of society. The lyrics suggest that the mother is carrying the child of Lucifer, which symbolizes a rebellion against societal norms and a desire for freedom. The imagery of the mother's pyre and the snake as a symbol of revenge reveal a dark and sinister vibe accentuated by the heavy guitars and drums.

The lyrics suggest the mother's desperation to escape the constraints of her life and society's judgmental gaze. She heads to the wilderness to give birth to her baby without the fear of being judged. Once her baby is born, the mother abandons him to the flow of the stream, metaphorically abandoning societal norms that forced her to flee in the first place.

The child grows up with venomous intent, and his mother's revenge sharpens his desire to seek retribution against society. The lyrics suggest that the child's mother eagerly awaits the day when her child seeks revenge against the people who drove her to the pyre. The song culminates with a call to arms against society's values, specifically against the merchant of religion who judges men by their deeds.

Hell yeah great stuff, we need so much more people influenced by 70s music like this.

If Zeppelin let all the people who were so uptight and just wrote them off as a blues ripoff band, we would have been robbed of one of the greatest bands ever. Thankfully they didn't let that negativity get to them, and they kept playing the music they loved and were influenced by.

Sounding like Pentagram/Sabbath is what more bands should try to do, there was so much great stuff in the 70s to be influenced by, it's about time someone modern is showing those influences.

The vocals reminds me a lot of Bobby Liebling of Pentagram.
