Stars
Duncan Laurence Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If this is home
Then what do I call where I came from?
I haven't seen the coast for so long
They got 'em here, but they're not the same
I never know
Know if I left too soon and too young
The people there who taught me so much
Did they get old?
Would they know this face?

Oh, it would have been selfless if I stayed
Oh, but I'm living here selfish in LA

There are no stars in The Hills
But still I find myself reaching for them
Fighting for them, dying for them
Still, there are no stars in The Hills

Miss dad and mom
And laughing with my little brothers
They're the ones who keep me humble
I'm not there to see them growing up

Oh, it would have been selfless if I stayed
Oh, but I'm living here selfish in LA

There are no stars in The Hills
But still I find myself reaching for them
Fighting for them, dying for them
Still, there are no stars in The Hills

No place like home here in Hollywood
No place like home here in Hollywood
No place like home here in Hollywood

There are no stars in The Hills
But still I find myself reaching for them
Fighting for them, dying for them

Knowing they're not real
There are no stars in The Hills

Overall Meaning

The song "Stars" by Duncan Laurence is about the singer's homesickness and longing for his roots. The first verse of the song talks about his confusion about what to call home now that he has moved away. He mentions that he misses the coast and the people who taught him so much. He wonders if they would recognize him if he went back. The chorus of the song speaks to the singer's longing for something that doesn't exist in the place he's currently in. He talks about fighting for and dying for the stars, despite their absence in The Hills, which symbolizes the fleeting nature of celebrity and the emptiness that can be found in a place that seems so glamorous from the outside.

The second verse of the song brings up the singer's family and how much he misses them. He talks about his brothers keeping him humble and the missed moments of growing up that he didn't get to see. The chorus is repeated twice more, each time emphasizing the emptiness of the pursuit of fame and success in a place that lacks real substance. The bridge of the song repeats the phrase "no place like home here in Hollywood," but ultimately concludes that even though he's reached for the stars and fought for them, they're not real.

Overall, the song is a reflection on the emptiness of the pursuit of fame and success, the longing for home and roots, and the realization that the things we chase after may not be as real or fulfilling as we imagined.

I love how the whole song is playing with two, maybe contradicting, sides. Career vs family, chasing dreams vs safety of comfort. Duncan’s singing about the coasts of gentle small town Hellevoetsluis vs those of the big city of LA. He sings of home, but what is home?
The bridge, “There’s no place like home here in Hollywood” is almost contradiction in itself, as you can read it twice: “There’s no place like home: Here in Hollywood”, meaning that he sees Hollywood as his home, or you see it the other way around, “There’s no place like home (Hellevoetsluis/Amsterdam/the Netherlands) here in Hollywood”, where he means that there’s no place in Hollywood that even remotely feels like home. And it echoes from the first verse, where he asks himself “if this is home, what do I call where I came from?” Both are home, but different, and what feels more really like home?

Also « stars » can refer to the ones in the sky he could see in his hometown and to the « stars » of Hollywood = famous people, supported by the verse « knowing that they are not real » at the end of the song.
