Being Followed
Duran Duran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To the voyer
Seated in the darkened room
Do you thrill
When the green light starts pulsing

Paranoia
The only valid point of view
If you know what I'm saying

I'm not alone
Being followed
Someone always watching what we do
Never alone
But I'm in the shadows
I dream things I don't want you to know

Something shifting
Between the sirens and the glow
Of red lights
And the blue slowly turning

A fog is lifting
A silhouette begins the show
Then the moment is stolen

I'm not alone
Being followed
Someone always watching what we do
Never alone
But I'm in the shadows
I dream things I don't want you to know

(La la la la la la la la)
(La la la la la la la la)
(La la la la la la la la)

In this chamber
Lit by scandal
Your the bullet
In the barrel
Your the last thing
As I'm falling
Bloody roaring
Still I'm calling out
I'm calling out

I'm not alone
Being followed
Never alone
I'm being followed
I'm not alone
Being followed
Never alone

I'm being followed
La la la la la la la

Overall Meaning

In Duran Duran's song Being Followed, the lyrics address the feelings of being constantly watched and surveilled. The opening lines address a voyeur, a concept that implies being watched without consent, and evokes an uncomfortable sense of being observed. The green light pulsing creates a sense of tension, as it suggests that the watcher is eager to see something happen. This theme of paranoia continues throughout the song, with the singer claiming that paranoia is the only valid point of view. This assertion could imply that the singer feels justified in their paranoia because they are actually being watched.

The chorus is the most straightforward part of the song, as it repeats the main message. The lyrical repetition creates a sense of unease, as the singer continuously states that they are not alone and that they are being followed. The line "but I'm in the shadows" adds an element of mystery to the song, as it suggests that the singer may be hiding something they don't want the watcher to know. The use of "la la la" in the chorus implies that the constant surveillance has robbed the singer of their words, and that they cannot truly express themselves because they feel like they are constantly being listened to.

The second verse brings in imagery of sirens and red and blue lights, which creates a sense of urgency and heightened danger. The silhouette beginning a show is a nod to the idea of being watched without consent, as it implies that the watcher is witnessing something private or intimate. The stolen moment adds to the paranoia and unease that permeates the song. The last lines of the song include a reference to scandal, which implies that the singer is potentially involved in something dangerous or illicit. The image of falling and calling out adds a sense of desperation to the song, as if the singer is begging for help or trying to escape.

Why 'Being Followed' hasn't been a single yet is just beyond me. Such an exiting track, every time I listen to it it's like being transported back to 1981/1982 Duran. Completley HEAVENLY. Already a classic just like Planet Earth and Careless Memories
