Hold Back The Rain
Duran Duran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're miles away from nowhere
And the wind doesn't have a name
So call it what you want to call it
Still blows down the lane

People tell me, I haven't changed at all
But I don't feel the same
And I bet you've had that feeling too
You can't laugh all the time

And if the fires burn out there's only fire to blame
(Hold back the rain)
No time for worry 'cause we're on the roam again
(Hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane
(Hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please, hold back the rain

So what if the words ain't rhyming
Did you think that it's just a game
I probably didn't even say that right
And I really don't give a damn

Okay go off and wander
I'm guilty just the same
Sometimes you're needed badly
So please come back again

And if the fires burn out there's only fire to blame
(Hold back the rain)
No time for worry 'cause we're on the roam again
(Hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane
(Hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please, hold back the rain

And if the stars burn out, there's only fire to blame
(Hold back the rain)
No time for worry 'cause we're on the roam again
(Hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane
(Hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please, hold back the rain

Hold back the rain
Hold back the rain
Hold back the rain
Hold back the rain
Hold back the rain
Hold back the rain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Duran Duran's song "Hold Back the Rain" describe a sense of displacement and restlessness. The singer feels far from home ("miles away from nowhere"), and the wind, which "doesn't have a name," adds to the sense of disorientation. However, despite the uncertainty of the situation, the singer suggests that we can still make meaning out of it by "calling it what you want to call it." The wind might be nameless, but we can still define it in our own terms.

The second verse addresses the idea of change. The singer is told that they haven't changed, but they don't feel the same. The lyrics suggest that change is inevitable, and that everyone experiences it at some point. Despite this, there are times when we all feel like we can't laugh all the time - in other words, we can't ignore the challenges and struggles that life can bring.

Throughout the song, the refrain "hold back the rain" repeats. This phrase seems to be a plea for help, a recognition that sometimes we can't do everything on our own. The imagery of rain and fire suggests natural forces that are beyond our control, and the repeated refrain emphasizes the need for support from others.

Best thing is I was young enough to have lived through this magic era of music

@Rose Williamson How’s this for a bit of irony? I saw Duran Duran (with Chic opening, fantastic!) play yesterday Sunday 9/4 at Chase Center, San Francisco. Wednesday I’ll be seeing the Stadium Tour with Def Leppard along with Mötley Crue, etc. If you haven’t seen Duran Duran lately I highly recommend you go before they close out their tour a month!

@ヒガノボル Great words my friend....unfortunately it looks like it's back....we need peace..we need to grow up

@Sean14 Unfortunately today in 2022 the great music is gone, and the fear of World War III is back.

Parker Mangrum

What a magical time it was. I was there. It was wonderful!!

The 80s were amazing....is it that we were so aware of the Cold War that tomorrow might be our last...and the music reflected that

People really need to face it that Duran Duran are probably one of the best bands to ever exist. Their appeal is so wide. Sometimes I find bands that are all male who hit mainstream success only try to appeal to women but Duran Duran appealed to everyone. There hasn't been a band like them in a long time.

I just can’t face it ! They had some great tracks but hardly one of the best bands to ever exist 😂
