Needle and the Damage Done
Duran Duran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've caught you knocking on my cellar door
I love you baby can I have some more ooo-ooo the damage done
I hate the city and I lost my band I watch the needle take another man
Gone, gone the damage done
I sing this song because I love the man
I know that some of you don't understand
Built up to keep from running out
I've seen the needle and the damage a little part of it in everyone
But if you junkies like the setting sun

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Needle and the Damage Done" by Duran Duran speak to the destructive nature of addiction. The singer describes catching someone knocking on their cellar door, presumably looking for drugs or other substances to feed their addiction. Despite knowing the damage that can come from substance abuse, the singer still loves the person and asks for more of their affection - a common theme in relationships affected by addiction.

The second verse alludes to the band's own struggles with addiction and the loss of a band member due to overdose. The singer watches as the needle takes another life, highlighting the dangers and consequences of drug abuse. The chorus repeats the phrase "gone, gone the damage done" as a somber reminder that once addiction takes hold, it can be difficult to escape.

The final verse acknowledges that not everyone understands the struggles of addiction, and that some turn to substances as a way to cope with their own pain. However, the singer cautions against relying on those harmful methods to feel better. The vivid imagery of "the needle and the damage" is a powerful symbol of the toll addiction can take on individuals and communities.

Ronnie Sutton Sounds like you want a cookie. Good for you.. you’ll think about this later in life and be floored. Who cares who’s making money right now. For you to hate on anyone right now is far from necessary. Imagine you in his shoes... what does he have for income right now? What he is doing could be needed for him.

My Dad once sung some lyrics from this song to me when he found out i was on heroin at 17. Im 37 now and 17 months clean. My Dad died of cancer on Friday. Happy he got to see me conquer my addiction.
