Ordinary World
Duran Duran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you

What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well, now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

(Just blown away)

Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Fear today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk

And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Every world
Is my world (I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world (I will learn to survive)

Any world
Is my world

Overall Meaning

The song “Ordinary World” by Duran Duran is about the struggle of moving on after a relationship has ended. The first verse sets the scene with the singer coming home on a rainy day and feeling haunted by the ghost of his past lover. The chorus then reflects on the emptiness that the end of the relationship has caused, wondering where his recognizable life has gone and questioning his sanity. Interestingly, the singer is determined to move on and not cry for what has been lost. He is determined to find an ordinary world and learn to survive.

The second verse offers some backstory into the relationship, with pride being the thing that tore them apart. After it’s over, the singer once again reflects on the crazy feeling that has taken over and wonders where his friend is when he needs them the most. The chorus repeats again with the singer reiterating that he won’t cry for yesterday and that he’ll learn to survive by finding his way to an ordinary world.

The bridge of the song adds a bigger picture to the song. It points out that there is suffering and greed in the world and that we often forget about it to focus on other things. The final chorus brings a message of hope, with the singer stating that every world is his world and he will learn to survive.

Not 1, not a few, but millions.
But what is TRULY reaching out from the music is GOD, through the Holy Spirit.
The darkness tried to take the song from us, by associating it with "The Evil Within"
(Think that's by chance? Wrong. Nothing is by chance. Things have meaning)
1 John 5:19 - We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
This is what the song is all about, and the "emotions" actually ready to explode in countless people are the sure knowledge that the world is NOT as it should be, not just enough, not divine enough, not kind enough, not sacrificing enough; too much in the hands of godless elites presiding over the chaos that is ALWAYS the hallmark of the D*v*l.
Loving money and power and the monolith that keeps most of us down and out.
Something new, more ORDINARY, has to break out from this - like a new butterfly from the chrysalis.
ordinary truth (instead of the endless lies and fakery), ordinary love, ordinary mercy.
ordinary compassion.
Just what Jesus means.
Just what the Holy Spirit works endlessly for - giving us signs in nature, culture (as above), Scripture and rapture.
When the rapture comes it will be too late for many.
So the time is now, stefano!

I found my poor sweet big brother dead in his bed on 7/30/20. That was the most devastating day of my life. I don’t remember the first few days after. But the Sunday after I put on my brave face and went to clean out his room and get it ready to be emptied. For some reason the moment I opened his door this song came into my head. I hadn’t thought about or heard it in literal years but there it was strong and clear every note and lyric. I burst into tears with the perfection of how exactly it captured what I’m going through. Thanks Duran Duran. My brother loved this song when we were teens. We both did.
