ANNIVERSARY
Duran Duran - Topic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come celebrate this union
Come holy and unchained
How do you know, stay or go
Keep riding on the train

What does it take beneath the skin
To keep from letting go?
Some moments burned into the storm
And some you'll never know

Oh, do, do, do, do, do
Oh, do, do, do, do, do
All our days (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)
Celebrate (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)

Across the world, on radio
For anyone to hear
We are the song, so bring it on
Once more be close and clear

All our days (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)
Celebrate (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)

It's our time (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)
Yours and mine (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)

Celebrate with silver, oak, and bone
Celebrate with paper, gold, and stone
It may not seem like much
It may not seem like much at all
It may not seem like much
But it's everything to us

Oh, do, do, do, do, do
Oh, do, do, do, do, do
All our days (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)
Celebrate (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)

All our days (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)
Celebrate (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)

It's our time (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)
Yours and mine (do, do, do, do, do)
Anniversary (do, do, do, do, do)

Do, do, do, do, do, do
I don't know, I don't know
Oh, are we still holding on?
And I know, can't stop, can't stop
And I know, can't stop you, no
Holding on, holding on
Holding on and on and on and on and on, yeah
And on, yeah
La, la, da, da
La, la, la, la

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Duran Duran's song "Anniversary" speak to the celebration of a union and the determination to stay committed despite challenges. The opening lines invite everyone to come and celebrate this union that is both holy and unrestrained. The singer asks a question of uncertainty - how do you know whether to stay or go - suggesting the complexities of relationships. The line "keep riding on the train" implies the continuous journey of the relationship, with all its ups and downs.

The chorus reflects on the deeper emotional connection required to sustain a relationship. The singer ponders what it takes beneath the surface to hold on and not let go. Some moments are burned into the storm, symbolic of intense and unforgettable experiences, while others will always remain unknown. This highlights the mystery and intricacies of relationships.

The second verse emphasizes the importance of music and how it connects people around the world. The singer declares that they are the song, and invites others to join in and be close and clear once again. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for finding unity and understanding through shared experiences, particularly in relationships.

The bridge of the song takes a slightly different turn, listing various materials associated with anniversaries - silver, oak, bone, paper, gold, and stone. This may suggest the different milestones a couple reaches over time, each symbolizing a stage in their journey together. The lyrics acknowledge that these milestones may not seem significant on the surface, but to the couple involved, they are everything.

Overall, "Anniversary" celebrates the enduring power of love and the commitment required to sustain a relationship through both the known and unknown challenges.

God! How does this band still continue to THRILL with new songs like this - 21 years into the 21st century???

"The Man Who Stole A Leopard" in 2010 absolutely took my breath away. A masterpiece equal to the best of their work.

"Anniversary" pulls it off again for Duran Duran. ONE listen - and that ascendant VOICE from Simon... that dance beat pulsing... that shimmering synth... it's so "DURAN DURAN".

I love this song.

(And today is my 25th wedding anniversary! Lucky wife & I!!)

@sweetjpboogie

I'm a child from the 90's.

My father used to blast Duran Duran alot in my childhood years, which resulted in me developping an affinity for the 80' 90's music.

They fucking went all-in with this song !

Absolutely outstanding, I would have never tought that Duan Duran would be able to pull a hit in the years to come !

Well Played Duran Duran, WP
