Enemy
Dustbowl Revival Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was like waking from a bad dream
All that screaming in the past
And now I know things
ain't what they seem
This old dream is gonna last a long time
Was it something
that I could have said?
Mama change your mind
Get out of your head

I could never be your enemy
(enemy enemy)
But now I just can't be your friend
Now I see you'll be the end of me
(enemy enemy)
If I don't try and defend myself
Oooh

The sun is out
I hear the children play
They clutch their clarinets as
the bus takes them away
The concrete's burning
in the winter time
they don't believe me
there's no reason to your rhyme
they said that up
is down instead
Daddy how did you get that in your head?

I could never be your enemy
(enemy enemy)
But now I just can't be your friend
Now I see you'll be the end of me
(enemy enemy)
If I don't try and defend myself
Oooh

Hold your honey close
It's going down
They made him king
But they forgot the crown
Please pass the salt
But don't you say a word
Jump in the lion's den
There's gonna be a fight on
Mama taught me
right from wrong
But we've been strangers
all along

I could never be your enemy
(enemy enemy)
But now I just can't be your friend
Now I see you'll be the end of me
(enemy enemy)

If I don't try and defend myself
Oooh

Overall Meaning

The chorus of this song declares the singer's conflicting feelings towards a person who was once their friend or maybe even family. The lyrics suggest that some altercation has taken place between them, and the singer now finds themselves in a position where they cannot be friends but also not enemies with this mysterious person. The line "I could never be your enemy, but now I just can't be your friend" highlights the singer's confusion and strong emotions towards this person.

The verses of the song paint a vivid picture of the singer's environment, from "children playing" and "clarinets" to "concrete burning." The lyrics suggest that the singer's environment is not conducive to their emotional well-being, and this environment contributes to their confusion, which they express in the chorus. The lyric "They made him king, but they forgot the crown" possibly hints at the theme of betrayal or unfaithfulness.

Overall, the lyrics suggest that the singer has experienced something traumatic, be it a betrayal or a severe fight. The environment they are in does not help in their healing process or makes it hard for those around them to understand their struggle. They now find themselves looking at the person, who they once held dear, as an enemy, but at the same time, they feel that they cannot bring themselves to hate them entirely.

I thought this was an older song when I heard it on the radio, like maybe Dusty Springfield or Nancy Sinatra. Was pleasantly surprised to find out otherwise. This song would fit in a Tarantino film I think.

Bugsnake

Really nice, looking forward to the album.

I think you missed a little high pitch (trombone or trumpet) doot at around 1:53 - 1:54 when cleaning up the recording.
