Back to Back
Dustin Kensrue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the call hasn't come,
Let me sit with you and wait.
When the other kind does,
Let me help you bear the weight.

Let me gather wood, when the fires gone out.
Let me pray for you, when you're filled with doubt.
Hold your white knuckled hands, when our daughters out too late.

Let me be the one, that's walking with you through the night.
When the morning comes, with it's brash and blinding light.
Let me be the one, that's crawling with you through the thorns.
Back to back, we both were born to share this fight.

When you haven't got no sleep,
Let me fix you a cup of Joe.
Let me soak your shirt in tears,
When the tumor starts to grow.

Let me rub your back when the children whine.
Let me push your cart through the five and dime.
Help you hobble down the hall with your IV line in tow.

Let me be the one, that's walking with you through the night.
When the morning comes, with it's brash and blinding light.
Let me be the one, that's crawling with you through the thorns.
Back to back, we both were born to share this fight.

There's no one I'd rather walk with,
Through the brier or the flame.
Let me hold you in the darkness,
In the fire, in the rain.

Let me be the one, that's walking with you through the night.
When the morning comes, with it's brash and blinding light.
Let me be the one, that's crawling with you through the thorns.
Back to back, we both were born to share this fight.

Back to back, we both were born to share this fight.
Back to back, we both were born to share this fight.

Overall Meaning

In "Back to Back" by Dustin Kensrue, the singer expresses his willingness to support and stand by his loved one during tough times. The song talks about being there for someone when they need emotional and physical support. The first verse talks about waiting with someone when they are feeling anxious or uncertain, and helping them bear the burden when things get tough. Kensrue sings about being a dependable partner and providing for their needs. This is further emphasized when he sings: "Let me gather wood, when the fires gone out. Let me pray for you, when you're filled with doubt. Hold your white-knuckled hands when our daughters out too late."

The second verse highlights the more physical aspect of the support, such as making a cup of coffee or being there for them when they're ill. The lyrics convey the idea of being willing to do anything to make life a little easier for the person they care about. Kensrue sings, "Let me rub your back when the children whine. Let me push your cart through the five and dime. Help you hobble down the hall with your IV line in tow."

In summary, What makes the song standout is how Kensrue communicates the importance of standing by someone through thick and thin- being there for them physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. It's a heartfelt expression of love and loyalty, and the music set to it is both beautiful and touching.

Cool picture. "All I've seen is just a glimmer through a shadowy mirror, but I know one day we'll see face to face."

I remember when I first heard Stare at the Sun years ago, though I was young at the time I could still tell that the lyrics were about Dustin searching for truth, and that day my Dad and I prayed for Dustin to find his faith and truth in Jesus Christ and its such a blessing to hear and see what Dustin has been doing recently and where our Almighty God has been leading him. Continue to carry the fire Dustin.

He was Christian on their first album. "This is my voice, all shadows stayed. / This is my heart upon the altar laid. / Please take all else away. Hear my cry, I beg, I plead, I pray. / I walk into the flames: / A calculated risk to further bless Your name. / So strike me deep and true / And in Your strength, I will live and die both unto You." -Identity Crisis (title track) It is great, though, that fans have also had the privilege to see his spiritual journey throughout his years with Thrice and after.

Dustin i dont know if you will read this but you have been such a musical inspiration to me. I started listening to thrice back when identity crisis first came out. I loved that album and every album since. As i got older my musical preferences changed and i love how your style changed on every album. But it still had that thrice feel to it. I went to every show you played in Toronto, and the farewell tour felt like the end of an era. Im sad, but im happy your still making great songs. This song has such a catchy riff. Your an awesome guy, great song writer and an amazing guitarist. Thanks buddy...i cant wait to hear the rest of the album.
